Golden Eagles Outlast Saint Martin's In Tight Game

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team found itself staring at an early deficit for the second straight game, but, once again, the Golden Eagles were able to overcome it.

Stung by a Saint Martin's goal in the 17th minute, the Golden Eagles got a penalty-kick goal from Tim Klefisch and a go-ahead goal from Ryan Arkelian and went on to beat the Saints, 2-1, Sunday at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State LA (4-0) remained unbeaten after four games, but the Golden Eagles had their hands full Sunday against a gritty Saint Martin's squad.

Cal State LA wound up with a 23-6 advantage in shots and a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Saint Martin's goalkeeper Griffin Small made 11 saves, including several outstanding stops to keep his team in it. Steven Barrera made one save for the Golden Eagles and also directed traffic through some dangerous Saint Martin's attacks with his team protecting a one-goal lead.

Saint Martin's (0-3) took an early lead when Brandon Madsen scored his first goal of the season. Steven Chu sent a long cross into the box and Madsen was able to head it in from right in front of Cal State LA's net.

Cal State LA got the tying goal in the 31st minute thanks to a strong effort by David Elizaga and a deft penalty kick from Klefisch. Elizaga made a dangerous run into the box and was tripped up, leading to the penalty kick. Klefisch calmly converted for his second goal of the season.

The Golden Eagles took the lead in the 38th minute with Elizaga once again playing a big part in the goal. This time, he eluded a pair of Saint Martin's defenders and centered to wide-open Arkelian, who one-timed a hard shot into the goal.

Julian Zamora had a match-high five shots for the Golden Eagles, including a prime opportunity early in the second half from an angle that sailed just wide. Hakon Laugsand had three shots, including a shot headed to the upper far corner that was tipped away by Small. Cal State LA was unable to convert on the ensuing corner kick.

Cal State LA had the majority of the possession in the second half, but Saint Martin's did an effective job keeping several of the Golden Eagles' shots from distance.

Cal State LA will now open California Collegiate Athletic Association play on Friday at Cal State San Bernardino.
