CARSON -- Cal State LA's baseball team got off to a solid start in its four-game series against cross-town rival Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The Golden Eagles broke a 1-1 tie with four runs in the third, two in the fourth and three in the sixth and went on to an 11-5 win over the Toros in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game at Toro Field. Cal State LA (10-5, 3-2 CCAA) had 17 hits, including three doubles, two triples and a home run. Cal State Dominguez Hills (2-12, 0-5 CCAA) had 10 hits and scored four runs in the seventh after Cal State LA had taken an 11-1 lead.
Sean Watkins kept up his torrid hitting, going 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBI and his third home run of the season. Watkins was the CCAA and NCAA Division II West Region Player of the Week after his outstanding performance last week against Cal State San Bernardino.
Nathan Navarrete went 3-for-6 and scored one run,
Isaac Dominguez was 1-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI and
Angel Sanchez was 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI. Every starter had at least one hit for the Golden Eagles.
Christian Broussard Jr. had another strong start for Cal State LA and improved to 4-0. He went 6 1/3 innings and gave up seven hits and three earned runs.
Holden Berger got the second out in the seventh inning and
Daniel Ferrell pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to finish up.
Broussard opened the scoring with a run-scoring double in the first inning and the Toros tied it up in the bottom of the frame.
Cal State LA then got run-scoring singles from Watkins,
Andrew Hermanson,
Jorge Garcia and
Angel Sanchez in the third inning to make it 5-1 and a run-scoring triple by Dominguez and a groundout by Broussard that drove in Dominguez made it 7-1 in the fourth.
Drew Seelman had a two-run triple in the fifth and scored on a Dominguez groundout to make it 10-1.
Cal State LA finished its scoring in the sixth when Watkins hit a solo home run.
Cal State LA will return to action at home on Friday with a doubleheader against Cal State Dominguez Hills beginning at 1 p.m.
