TURLOCK -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team found the going tough in the second half of a California Collegiate Athletic Association game at Stanislaus State.
The Golden Eagles and Warriors were tied at halftime, but Cal State LA shot just 24 percent in the second half and fell to Stanislaus State, 68-52, Saturday in the Ed and Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena. Cal State LA (6-3, 2-2 CCAA) held a 31-27 lead with 18:40 to go, but managed just 21 points the rest of the way.
Jalyn Pennie had another strong outing with 19 points, five rebounds and two blocks, while
Elliott Smith had 10 points and eight rebounds.
Ty Davis had 15 points and five rebounds for Stanislaus State (6-2, 3-2 CCAA), while Andy Cleaves had 13 points and seven rebounds and Kyle Gouveia had 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Khalil Williams had eight points for the Golden Eagles,
Sequan Walker had seven points and
Jihad Woods had six points and 11 rebounds.
Cal State LA shot just 30.5 percent (18-of-59) for the game and hit just 7 of 23 attempts from 3-point range. Stanislaus State was 24-of-56 (42.9 percent) and hit 6-of-22 from 3-point range.
Cal State LA was out-rebounded, 42-35.
The Golden Eagles were tied, 27-27, at halftime and a dunk by Pennie and a layup by Smith to open the second half gave the Golden Eagles a 31-27 advantage. Stanislaus State, though, scored the next 14 points and never looked back. A layup by Woods brought the Golden Eagles back to within 45-43 with 8:59 to go and a free throw by Smith kept the margin at 49-45 with 6:39 to go, but the Warriors went on a 9-0 run to put the game out of reach.
Cal State LA will return to action with a home game on Dec. 14 against Cal State San Bernardino.
