Golden Eagles Regroup And Post Exciting CCAA Win

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team raced out to a 19-point lead Thursday against perennial California Collegiate Athletic Association power Cal State San Bernardino only to see the lead evaporate in stunning fashion.

Garrett Carter, though, stopped the Coyote run with a big 3-pointer and the Golden Eagles went on for an important 79-71 victory over the Coyotes in University Gym. Cal State LA (7-3, 3-2 CCAA) snapped a two-game losing streak in conference play with the big win.

Carter finished with 17 points to lead four Golden Eagles in double figures. Khalil Williams had 13 points, Jalyn Pennie had 12 points and three rebounds and Jihad Woods had 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Justin Frazier led the Coyotes (3-6, 1-4 CCAA) with 21 points, 19 of them coming in the second half as Cal State San Bernardino made things very interesting.

Elliott Smith and Sean Estes had nine points each off the bench for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA shot 49 percent for the game (24-of-49) and knocked down 10 more 3-pointers in 21 tries (47.6 percent). Carter was 4-of-7 from 3-point range, while Estes was 3-of-4. Cal State San Bernardino shot 38.5 percent for the game (22-of-57), but was just 5-of-27 from 3-point range and missed its first 13 attempts from beyond the arc.

Both teams shot well from the free-throw line in game that saw 50 fouls, 25 from each team. Cal State LA was 21-of-28 from the line, while Cal State San Bernardino was 22-of-31.

Cal State LA had a 38-30 edge in rebounding.

Cal State LA got a 3-pointer late in the first half from Smith and took a 39-25 lead at halftime. The Golden Eagles extended their lead to 51-32 after a four-point play by Carter with 16:57 to go. The Coyotes, though, came storming back and used a 36-17 run and tied the game at 68-68 with 3:14 left after a 3-pointer by Frazier.

Carter, though, responded with another 3-pointer to regain the lead for the Golden Eagles, 71-68. Williams followed with a layup and made it 73-68 with 2:37 to go. Cal State LA never led by less than four points the rest of the way and picked up the win.

Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with a conference game against UC San Diego at 7:30 p.m.
