SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team had a furious rally come up just short against a talented San Francisco State team Friday night.
The Golden Eagles sliced a 20-point second-half deficit down to two points with five minutes left, but fell short to the Gators, 87-78, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in Main Gym. Cal State LA (6-2, 2-1 CCAA) lost for the first time in conference play and had a five-game winning streak snapped.
Cal State LA trailed, 70-50, with 8:43 to go, but scored 14 straight points as part of a 24-6 run that made it 76-74 with 2:20 remaining. The Golden Eagles, though, surrendered the next eight points and San Francisco State (5-2, 2-0 CCAA) held on for the victory.
Garrett Carter scored 18 points to lead three Golden Eagles in double figures.
Jalyn Pennie had 13 points and five blocked shots, while
Devin Means had 10 points and five rebounds.
Evan Zeller had 23 points for San Francisco State, while Warren Jackson had 18 points, eight rebounds and five assists and Chiefy Ugbaja had 15 points, 11 rebounds, four blocks and five steals.
Khalil Williams had nine points on three 3-pointers for the Golden Eagles, while
Jihad Woods had eight points and eight rebounds and
Elliott Smith had eight points.
Cal State LA had another productive night from 3-point range, making 14 more 3-pointers in 35 tries (40 percent). The Golden Eagles were 24-of-63 overall (38.1 percent). San Francisco State was 30-of-61 overall (49.2 percent) and made half of its 18 attempts from 3-point range. Cal State LA was 16-of-22 from the free-throw line, while San Francisco State was 18-of-26.
Cal State LA was outrebounded, 45-34 and committed 13 turnovers to 17 for the Gators.
The Golden Eagles allowed the first four points of the game, but came back to tie it at 9-9 following a 3-pointer from
Sequan Walker. San Francisco State, though, scored the next seven points and led by as many ss 10 points before settling for a 44-35 halftime lead.
The Gators then steadily built their lead to 20 points at 70-50 before Cal State LA started its big comeback. Carter and Williams hit back-to-back 3-pointers to start the run and Smith made a layup to make it 70-58. After Woods hit one free throw, Means hit a 3-pointer to make it 70-64 with five minutes to play. The Gators built their lead back to 10 points, but a pair of Carter 3-pointers around two free throws by Woods brought the Golden Eagles to within two points, 76-74, with 2:21 to go.
The Gators then got an offensive rebound and basket from Jackson and took advantage of a pair of Cal State LA turnovers to make an 8-0 run that pushed the lead back to 10 points down the stretch.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday night with a road game at Stanislaus State.
