Golden Eagles Continue Their Long-Range Barrage

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team continued to thrive with some red-hot long-distance shooting.

After setting a new program record on Tuesday with 21 successful 3-point attempts, the Golden Eagles knocked down 14 more on Saturday in a 91-69 victory over Concordia-Portland in University Gym. Cal State LA (6-1) stretched its winning streak to five games and did it against a Concordia team that was ranked eighth in the West Region heading into the week. The Golden Eagles were ranked ninth in the poll by the D2SIDA.

Garrett Carter led the way with a game-high 24 points. He was a perfect 6-of-6 from 3-point range and 9-of-12 overall. He also had three assists and three steals. Jalyn Pennie had another strong game as well with 16 points, eight rebounds and four blocks. Sequan Walker had 13 points and Elliott Smith had 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists.

Christopher Edward had 19 points to lead Concordia (4-3). Jarrett Gray added 15 points and five assists.

Khalil Williams had nine points and five rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Jihad Woods and Sean Estes had six points each.

Cal State LA was 14-of-29 from 3-point range (48.3 percent) and shot 47.7 percent overall (31-of-65), while Concordia shot 46.6 percent (27-of-58) and was 8-of-23 from 3-point range.

Cal State LA also had a 40-31 rebounding edge and forced 18 turnovers while committing 12.

The Golden Eagles scored the first six points of the game and led most of the way. Concordia went on a 13-2 run in the first half took a brief 15-14 lead, but the Golden Eagles scored the next 11 points to take the lead for good. Pennie made a layup to regain the lead, Williams made a 3-pointer to extend the lead and Carter hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give Cal State LA a 25-15 advantage.

A 3-pointer by Walker gave the Golden Eagles a 45-30 halftime lead.

Cal State LA opened the second half with a 9-0 run that was completed by a 3-pointer by Williams that made it 54-30. A 3-pointer by Walker kept the lead at 24 points, 60-36, with 14:39 to go before a Concordia surge that sliced the lead to 68-51.

Kenneth Cyprian responded with a 3-pointer to stop the run and Cal State LA led by at least 16 points the rest of the way.

Cal State LA will return to action on Tuesday with an exhibition game at Loyola Marymount.
