LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team shattered program records for 3-pointers on Tuesday night in an electrifying win over Bethesda.
The Golden Eagles set new program marks for 3-pointers made (21) and attempted (52) in a 106-81 win over the Flames in a non-conference game in University Gym. Cal State LA (5-1) won its fourth straight game with another sizzling offensive performance.
Sean Estes led the way with a game-high 24 points, hitting 7-of-9 from 3-point range and narrowly missing the new program record for 3-pointers in a game set by
Garrett Carter on Friday against Cal State Monterey Bay. Carter was 8-of-10 from 3-point range in the win over the Otters.
Grant Arthur also had a sensational game, knocking down all five of his 3-pointers and scoring 17 points. Arthur and Estes are both from La Canada High School and the two were a combined 12-of-14 from 3-point range and totalled 41 points.
Jalyn Pennie had 12 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks, while
Khalil Williams had 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
Gabriel Adersteg had 23 points, all in the second half, to lead Bethesda (3-7). Isaiah Hicks had 19 points, 11 rebounds and six assists.
Cal State LA also got 11 points from
Garrett Carter and 10 points from
Brandon Hitchman. The Golden Eagles had six players reach double figures in all.
The Golden Eagles actually had more 3-pointers (21) than 2-point baskets (18) in the game. The Golden Eagles were out-rebounded, 47-41, but forced 24 turnovers. Cal State LA also moved the ball well, picking up 29 assists on its 39 successful baskets.
Cal State LA hit 13 of its 3-pointers in the opening half while taking a 57-36 halftime lead. Bethesda made a good run in the opening minutes of the second half, cutting the margin to 14 points, 62-48, but the Golden Eagles responded with a quick 12-2 run and never looked back. Cal State LA's largest lead was 34 points.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a big West Region contest with Concordia-Portland in Los Angeles at 5 p.m.
