Golden Eagles Get Defensive To Win Season Opener

RIVERSIDE -- Cal State LA's men's basketball showed off its offensive firepower in its first two exhibition games, but the Golden Eagles used a stingy defense to pick up a win in its regular-season opener.

The Golden Eagles limited Holy Names to just 33.3 percent shooting and went on to a 60-49 victory in the opening game of the Lancers Tip-Off Challenge at California Baptist. Cal State LA (1-0) also forced 23 turnovers in the contest.

Elliott Smith led a balanced offensive attack with 11 points and five rebounds, while Jalyn Pennie had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. He also had five of Cal State LA's nine blocks.

Alonzo Taylor had 21 points and six rebounds for Holy Names (0-1).

Cal State LA was just 21-of-64 (32.8 percent) from the floor and 5-of-20 (25 percent) from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were also 13-of-22 from the free-throw line. Holy Names was 19-of-57 (33.3 percent) and just 3-of-22 (13.6 percent) from 3-point range.

Cal State LA had a 48-40 rebounding edge and forced 23 turnovers while committing 17. Garrett Carter, Kenneth Cyprian and Kikuchi Bailey had two steals each.

Devin Means had nine points and two assists for the Golden Eagles, while Cyprian had seven. Sean Estes hit both of his shots and had five points, while Carter also finished with five points and three assits.

Cal State LA built leads as large as 15 points and led from start to finish.

A 3-pointer by Sequan Walker started the Golden Eagles on an 10-0 run that ended with an offensive rebound and basket by Smith and made the score 15-3 just eight minutes into the game. Holy Names battled back and sliced the lead to two points, 15-13, but the Golden Eagles surged again late in the half and took a 30-18 halftime lead following a dunk by Pennie.

A free throw by Smith and a layup by Cyprian following a steal and pass from Carter gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead, 33-18, with 19 minutes to go, but Holy Names again battled back and cut the deficit to three points, 41-38, with 9:36 to go. The Golden Eagles held a slim 48-44 lead with 3:49 left, but went on an 11-3 run to put the game away. Baskets by Carter and Smith started the run, which included an offensive rebound and dunk by Pennie, a 3-pointer by Means and free throws by Carter and Means.

Cal State LA will face No. 14 California Baptist on Saturday at 2 p.m.
