HAYWARD -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team battled through some adversity before settling for a California Collegiate Athletic Association tie at Cal State East Bay on Sunday.
The Golden Eagles, ranked 18th in the nation, enjoyed a large advantage in shots, but trailed for most of the match before a tying goal from
David Elizaga in the 81st minute enabled them to earn a 1-1 tie with the Pioneers. Cal State LA (9-1-2, 3-1-2 CCAA) had a 22-9 edge in shots, including a 16-3 advantage after halftime.
Cal State LA also had a 9-2 edge in corner kicks, including a 7-0 advantage after halftime.
Steven Barrera made four saves for the Golden Eagles, while Carlos Moreno made 13 saves for the Pioneers (2-8-3, 0-7-1 CCAA).
Julian Zamora had a match-high eight shots for the Golden Eagles, including four on goal. Elizaga had three shots, while
Steven Eberle and
Miguel Galvan Lara had two shots each.
It took awhile for the Golden Eagles to find their footing and they survived a pair of shots from Cal State East Bay's Jared Johnson in the third minute, one that hit the post and another that hit the crossbar in a quick flurry.
The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute after a goal from Grant La Fleur with an assist from Alec Hester.
The shots were even at halftime, 6-6, before the Golden Eagles really began to pressure after halftime.
Their work was finally rewarded in the 81st minute when Elizaga scored the equalizer with assists from Zamora and Galvan Lara. It was the first goal of the season for Elizaga, who leads the CCAA in assists with seven. Zamora picked up his third assist of the season and Galvan Lara did the same.
Adrian Diaz had a shot for the Golden Eagles in the final seconds of regulation, but Moreno made the save.
Tim Klefisch had an opportunity near the end of the first overtime, but was stopped and Barrera made a save with about one minute left in the second overtime period.
Cal State LA will return to action on Wednesday with a CCAA match at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
