CARSON -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team ended up on the wrong side of a thriller Wednesday night at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The No. 25 Golden Eagles got a game-tying goal in the 88th minute from
Rigoberto Maciel, only to see the Toros get the game-winner with 47 seconds left to take a 3-2 California Collegiate Athletic Association decision. Cal State LA (9-2-2, 3-2-2 CCAA) had a final flurry in the final seconds with three shots and a corner kick, but was unable to send the game into overtime.
The Golden Eagles and Toros (9-3-1, 6-1 CCAA) split regular-season games with Cal State LA taking a 4-1 non-conference decision in Los Angeles last month and Cal State Dominguez Hills getting the win in the conference matchup on Wednesday.
Cal State LA had a 22-21 advantage in shots, including a 14-9 edge in the second half. Cal State Dominguez Hills had a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Julian Zamora had seven shots for the Golden Eagles, including his team-leading eighth goal of the season.
Steven Eberle had four shots, while
Robin Lindahl and
David Elizaga had three shots each.
After the Golden Eagles survived an early flurry by the Toros, Zamora opened the scoring with a goal in the 28th minute.
Miguel Galvan Lara set up the goal with a pass from the left side. Zamora was able to fire a low shot into the net for his eighth goal of the season.
The lead didn't last long, though, because the Toros tied it just 43 seconds later on a goal by Leonardo Nogueira.
The score remained tied until the 79th minute when Carlos Torres Jr. scored with assists from Emmanuel Corona and Angel Ayala to give the Toros a 2-1 lead.
That set off a frantic finale.
Rigoberto Maciel, who was substituted into the contest for an offensive boost, provided just that when he got a pass from Zamora and fired a shot inside the far post for his second goal of the season with just 2:46 remaining.
Cal State Dominguez Hills, though, got a free kick in the final minute and Austin De Madeiros headed in the kick from Adam Vargas to give the Toros the lead with 47 seconds left.
Cal State LA generated some chances in the final seconds and Cal State Dominguez Hills goalkeeper Chase Gentry needed to make big saves to stop attempts by Lindahl and Eberle in the final 10 seconds remaining.
Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with a conference match at home against San Francisco State at 2 p.m.
