SEASIDE -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team used some freshmen power to post an important California Collegiate Athletic Association victory.
Playing for the first time in 12 days, the Golden Eagles got a pair of goals from freshman
Irma Pinzon, both on assists from freshman
Paulina Chaidez, and went on to a 2-1 win over Cal State Monterey Bay Friday at the Otter Sports Complex. Cal State LA (5-2-2, 3-1-1 CCAA) had a 20-8 advantage in shots while beating a Cal State Monterey Bay (4-5-3, 2-4-1 CCAA) team that was unbeaten at home (2-0-3) prior to Friday.
The Golden Eagles had a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks in the game as well. Cal State LA goalkeeper
Adriana Maldonado made one save and the only goal allowed came via a first-half penalty kick. Cal State Monterey Bay goalkeeper Victoria Whyte made five saves.
Pinzon opened the scoring with her first goal of the season in the 34th minute. Chaidez set up the goal with a cross from the left side that Pinzon headed into the net.
The lead didn't last long because Cal State Monterey Bay tied it when Hannah Kind scored on a penalty kick in the 39th minute.
The match was tied at halftime even though the Golden Eagles had a 10-3 edge in shots.
The duo of Pinzon and Chaidez struck again in the 59th minute for the game-winner. Once again, Chaidez sent in a cross from the left side and this time Pinzon used her foot to fire a shot just past a diving Whyte.
Chaidez now has seven goals and three assists for a conference-leading 17 points.
Zarette Munoz-Aguilar had a big match for the Golden Eagles and was a consistent threat with a game-high seven shots, three on goal. Chaidez had four shots, while
Meranda Salazar,
Holly Abdelkader,
Tatiana Zuvic and Pinzon had two shots each.
Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with a road match at Cal State East Bay at 2 p.m.
