ARCATA -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team had its chances, but was unable to solve No. 19 Sonoma State in an early-morning California Collegiate Athletic Association match.
The Golden Eagles got a strong showing from goalkeeper
Adriana Maldonado and a brilliant scoring chance from
Zarette Munoz-Aguilar, but the Seawolves got a goal in the 20th minute and made it stand up in a 1-0 victory. Cal State LA (7-3-3, 5-2-2 CCAA) slipped behind second-place Sonoma State (12-2, 6-2 CCAA) in the conference race.
The game was played at Humboldt State due to the recent fires and unplayable air quality in the Sonoma area.
The game featured the No. 2-ranked team in the NCAA Division II West Region (Sonoma State) vs. the No. 6-ranked team (Cal State LA).
Maldonado made nine saves for the Golden Eagles, while Sonoma State's Kristen Spear made four.
Sonoma State had a 22-10 edge in shots and a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Munoz-Aguilar had a team-high four shots, including a dangerous strike off a corner kick from
Holly Abdelkader that hit the crossbar and stayed out.
The only goal of the game came following a corner kick and was scored by Sonoma State's Bella Amyx. It was Amyx's fourth goal of the season.
Munoz-Aguilar,
Paulina Chaidez,
Meranda Salazar and Abelkader had the shots on goal for the Golden Eagles. Cal State LA generated some good pressure in the final minutes, but an attempt by
Victoria Arredondo following a corner kick by Munoz-Aguilar was blocked in the 89th minute.
Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday at Humboldt State. That game will be played at 1 p.m.
