SAN SALVADOR, EL SALVADOR -- Cal State LA's Khallifah Rosser helped Team USA bring its overall medal tally to 62 on Sunday with wins in the 400-meter hurdles and 4x400 relay at the 2016 North American Central American Caribbean U-23 Championships.
Rosser won in dominating fashion in the 400 hurdles, taking the gold medal with a winning time of 49.25 at Estadio Nacional Jorge "El Mágico" Gonzalez in San Salvador. Rosser finished well ahead of Jose L. Gaspar of Cuba, who was second in 49.92 and Juander Santos of the Dominican Republic, who was third in 50.02. Robert Grant of the United States was fifth in 51.08.
Rosser also ran the third leg of Team USA's 4x400 relay team that took gold with a winning time of 3:00.89. Team USA won by nearly four seconds. Rosser had a split time of 44.60.
"To be blessed with the opportunity to compete on an international level is absolutely mind-blowing," Rosser said. "Being able to claim the NACAC 400 hurdles title is unbelievable and helping the team win the 4x4 relay is also gratifying. I feel so relieved that my 10 months of training paid off in so many ways. I also feel relieved my season is finally over. I have Coach Orentheus (Hutcherson) to thank for working with me all season long and Coach (Tina) Fernandes to thank for gearing me up for the next level. I have my fellow Golden Eagles to thank for all the support. Lastly, I have my friends and family back home to thank for the love, support and encouragement. This has been a tremendous season and I'm so thankful."
Last week, Rosser won his heat in the first round of the U.S. Olympic Trials before finishing a close fifth place in his heat of the semi-finals.
He won an NCAA Division II championship in the 400 hurdles for Cal State LA and equalled a school record with a time of 49.04
Cal State LA head coach Tina Fernandes also had a successful NACAC experience. She was the women's sprint s/hurdles coach and her athletes took a silver in the 100, bronze in the 200Â silver in the 400 and swept the 400 hurdles. The 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams both won gold medals.
"It was an honor to be chosen to be the women's sprints and hurdles coach for the USATF at the NACAC Championships," Fernandes said. "It was a great plus that Khallifah was later selected to be on the team. Working with the USA staff was amazing. We came together as a team and tried to put every athlete in the best situation to compete well. We were able to help the U.S. Athletes win 62 medals."
