Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Golden Eagles End Regular Season With A Thriller

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team wrapped up its regular season with a thrilling victory over the conference's regular-season champion.

The Golden Eagles got a huge game from senior Joshua Munzon and held on for a 65-64 win over Chico State Saturday night in the Eagles Nest. Cal State LA (10-17, 9-11 CCAA) won its third straight game and its seventh in the last eight games to earn its way into the eight-team California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament. The Golden Eagles will face No. 1 seed Chico State (22-5, 16-4 CCAA) on Tuesday night in Chico in a first-round game. The semi-finals and finals will be held in Stockton on March 4-5.

Munzon poured in 21 points to go along with six rebounds, two assists and two steals. He hit several big shots, but none bigger than a long 3-pointer that gave the Golden Eagles a 65-60 lead with 41 seconds to go and proved to be the game-winner. The Wildcats got a pair of tip-ins by Isaiah Ellis down the stretch to close to within one point and misfired on a contested jumper at the buzzer that could have won it.

Munzon was joined in double figures by Duce Zaid, who had 17 points, two rebounds and three steals. Justin Snavely had seven points and four rebounds and Dushon Carter had six points and four rebounds.

Ellis had an outstanding game for Chico State, scoring a game-high 23 points and just missing a double-double with nine rebounds. Robert Duncan had 14 points, eight rebounds and seven assists and Tanner Giddings had 13 points and seven rebounds.

Open looks were hard to come by in a battle between two of the conference's top defensive teams. Cal State LA shot 43.1 percent (22-of-51) and made just 5-of-20 attempts from 3-point range (25 percent). Munzon hit four of those 3-pointers in eight tries. Chico State was just 3-of-18 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 16-of-21 from the free-throw line, while the Wildcats were 15-of-19. Chico State had a sizeable 39-25 rebounding edge, but also committed 15 turnovers, while Cal State LA committed only six.

The Golden Eagles opened up a 20-12 lead after a 3-pointer by Munzon 10 minutes into the game and settled for a 32-27 halftime lead after an acrobatic tip-in by Snavely at the buzzer.

The Golden Eagles took their biggest lead of the second half at 36-29 after a pair of free throws by Zaid, but Chico State responded with an 8-0 run capped by a dunk by Ellis. Chico State grabbed its last lead at 45-43 after a layup by Duncan with 10:26 to go, but Munzon hit a 3-pointer on Cal State LA's next possession to give the Golden Eagles the lead for good. The Wildcats pulled to within one at 56-55 with 4:24 to go, but Zaid hit a free throw and Munzon converted a three-point play to make it 60-55 with 2:13 remaining. Tyler Harris made three free throws to cut the margin to two points, but Andre McPhail hit a pair of free throws to extend the lead to 62-58.

Duncan scored on a layup to make it 62-60 before Munzon's dramatic 3-pointer boosted the advantage to 65-60. Those points proved to be just enough. The Golden Eagles had a turnover, a missed free throw and then a lane violation on a second free-throw attempt with five seconds left, leaving some anxious moments as the clock finally wound down.

The Golden Eagles honored five seniors - Andre McPhail, Joshua Munzon, Duce Zaid, Dushon Carter and Collin Johnson -- in pregame ceremonies.
