SEATTLE -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team gave unbeaten Seattle Pacific all it could handle Saturday in a non-conference game in Brougham Pavilion.
The Golden Eagles held a halftime lead and trailed by just three points with three minutes to go before the Falcons pulled away for a 54-48 victory. Cal State LA (5-4) led by as many as seven points early in the game and battled Seattle Pacific (8-0) on even terms during the hard-fought contest.
Da'Jah Jackson and
Samantha Lee each had 11 points for the Golden Eagles, while Courtney Hollander had 13 points and nine rebounds to lead the Falcons.
Alma Serna had six points and a team-high eight rebounds,
Rikke Fabricius had six points and three rebounds in 20 minutes of playing time before fouling out and
Mackenzie Barnes had six points and three rebounds for the Golden Eagles.
Christine Delapina had four points, five assists and two steals.
Cal State LA started well and used an 8-0 run to erase a 7-6 deficit in the first quarter. Barnes put the Golden Eagles ahead with back-to-back baskets and jumpers by Delapina and Fabricius gave Cal State LA a 14-7 lead. The Falcons tied it with a 7-0 run, but a 3-pointer by Lee before the buzzer gave the Golden Eagles a 17-14 lead after one period.
Another 3-pointer by Lee to open the second quarter gave the Golden Eagles a 20-14 lead. Seattle Pacific used a 9-2 run to take a 23-22 lead, but an offensive rebound and basket by Barnes gave Cal State LA a 24-23 halftime lead.
Serna got the opening basket of the third quarter to give the Golden Eagles a 26-23 lead, but Seattle Pacific scored the next 11 points to take the lead for good.
Three straight layups by Jackson brought the Golden Eagles to within 35-32 late in the period and a basket by Serna made it 37-34 entering the final quarter.
Baskets by Jackson and Serna got the Golden Eagles within one point, 39-38, with 5:54 to go, but that was as close as Cal State LA would get. A 3-pointer by Lee made it 44-41 with 3:34 to go, but Seattle Pacific scored the next eight points to put the game out of reach.
Cal State LA will complete its two-game trip with a game against Central Washington on Monday before resuming California Collegiate Athletic Association play next Friday with a home game against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
