Golden Eagles Drop Road Game To Wildcats

ELLENSBERG, WASH. -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team showed tremendous resiliency once again on Monday night, but saw a large comeback bid fall short at Central Washington.

The Golden Eagles sliced a 23-point third-quarter deficit down to seven points early in the fourth quarter, but Central Washington regrouped and posted an 82-71 victory in Nicholson Pavilion. Cal State LA (5-5), which earlier in the day was ranked No. 10 in the Women's Basketball Division II Media Poll sponsored by D2SIDA, completed a rugged non-conference schedule that included trips to Alaska and Washington against some of the top competition in the West Region.

Rikke Fabricius led four Golden Eagles in double figures with 22 points and eight rebounds. Da'Jah Jackson had 15 points, four rebounds and three assists, Samantha Lee had 10 points and made three more 3-pointers and Christine Delapina had 10 points and five assists. Delapina was 2-for-2 on 3-point attempts.

Korney Grattic had a game-high 20 points to lead Central Washington (5-5) and hit all 12 of her free-throw attempts in the game. Sadie Mensing had 14 points for the Wildcats, who had five players reach double figures in scoring.

Cal State LA shot 38.6 percent (22-of-57) overall and was 9-of-16 from 3-point range. Central Washington shot 50 percent (27-of-54) and was 5-of-14 from 3-point range. Both teams were outstanding from the free-throw line with Cal State LA hitting 18-of-21 and Central Washington making 23-of-28. Central Washington held a 34-32 rebounding edge and Cal State LA committed 13 turnovers to nine for Central Washington.

Central Washington had a 21-6 edge in points off of turnovers.

The Golden Eagles started well and had a 14-11 lead midway through the first period after a 3-pointer by Fabricius and still held a 16-13 lead after a basket by Jackson. Central Washington, though, closed out the first quarter with an 11-4 run to take a 24-20 lead. The Wildcats extended their lead to 50-34 at halftime and took their biggest advantage at 60-37 halfway through the third quarter.

The Golden Eagles, though, responded with a sustained run that quickly closed the gap. Lee hit a free throw and Fabricius converted a three-point play to start the comeback. Two free throws by Delapina, a layup by Marina LaPuzza, two free throws by Mackenzie Barnes, a layup by Fabricius and two 3-pointers by Lee made it 68-55 at the end of three quarters.

Jackson hit a 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter and two free throws by Fabricius pulled the Golden Eagles to within 70-63 with seven minutes to play and a basket by Jackson kept the Golden Eagles within 74-65 with five minutes to go, but Central Washington scored the next eight points to regain control. Delapina hit a pair of 3-pointers to stop the Wildcats' run.

Cal State LA, which is 2-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play, will resume conference play on Friday with a home game against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
