Golden Eagles Use Miraculous Rally To Stun Toros

LOS ANGELES – Cal State LA's women's basketball team stayed unbeaten in California Collegiate Athletic Association play after a miraculous comeback victory Friday night over Cal State Dominguez Hills.
 
Christine Delapina was fouled on a 3-point attempt with just one second remaining and hit her final two free-throw attempts to lift the Golden Eagles to a thrilling 90-89 win Friday in University Gym. Cal State LA (6-5, 3-0 CCAA) trailed by eight points with 47 seconds remaining before putting together an incredible rally.
 
The final frantic seconds had a series of amazing plays. First, Samantha Lee, who scored all 15 of her points in the fourth quarter, was fouled on a 3-point attempts and hit all three free throws to make it 84-79 with 36 seconds to go. Then, after a quick Toro turnover, Mackenzie Barnes made a layup to make it 84-81.
 
Destinee Williams made two free throws for the Toros to stretch the lead to 86-81, but Lee countered with a 3-pointer to make it 86-84 with 24 seconds remaining. Dijour Ledbetter calmly hit two free throws for the Toros, but Da'Jah Jackson scored on a quick layup to make it 88-86 with 16 seconds to go.
 
Lee was then called for a foul after the inbounds pass, but Cal State Dominguez Hills was whistled for a technical foul. Lee hit the two free throws to tie it at 88-88 before Yasmine Tweedy made one free throw to give the Toros an 89-88 lead with 15 seconds to go.
 
Delapina came down and missed a 3-pointer, but hustled to track down the rebound and was fouled while getting off a second 3-point attempt with one second to go. After missing the first free throw, she made the next two to give the Golden Eagles the win.
 
After trailing by 13 points entering the fourth quarter, 67-54, Cal State LA outscored Cal State Dominguez Hills, 36-22, in the final period. Lee had all 15 of her points in the quarter, while Jackson had nine. Cal State LA also took advantage of 10 Cal State Dominguez Hills turnovers and was 16-of-22 from the free-throw line. The Toros were also good from the line in the final quarter, hitting 18-of-24, but made only two baskets over the final 10 minutes.
 
Jackson had a season-high 25 points to lead Cal State LA, while Rikke Fabricius had 16 points, Lee had 15 points and Delapina finished with 13 points.
 
Imari Brown had a game-high 29 points for Cal State Dominguez Hills (3-6, 0-2 CCAA), while Simone Thompson had 16 points, Kayla Gillett had 11 points and Delaura Castaneda had 10 points.
 
Cal State LA shot 45.3 percent for the game (29-of-64), but was just 6-of-22 from 3-point range (27.3 percent). The Golden Eagles were 26-of-47 from the free-throw line and just 10-of-25 over the first three quarters. Cal State Dominguez Hills shot 46.6 percent (27-of-58) and was 9-of-18 from 3-point range. The Toros were 26-of-39 from the free-throw line.
 
Cal State LA had a 44-41 rebounding edge and committed 22 turnovers to 20 for the Toros.
 
The Golden Eagles struggled for most of the game until their fourth-quarter heroics. Cal State LA had a 24-20 lead late in the first quarter, only to see the Toros close the period with an 8-1 run to take a 24-21 lead.
 
Cal State LA took a 34-33 lead with 5:51 to go in the second quarter, but surrendered the last 12 points of the quarter to trail 45-34 at halftime.
 
It was more of the same in the third quarter as Cal State Dominguez Hills answered every challenge and opened up 16-point lead, 67-51, in the final minute of the period before a 3-pointer by Jackson made it 67-54.
 
Then the fourth quarter arrived. Cal State LA still trailed by 15 points, 74-59, with 6:40 to go before surging back into the game. The deficit was still 10 points, 76-66, with four minutes to play. Lee scored 14 points in the final 2:32 and Cal State LA amazingly got the ball into the hands of Delapina to hit her clutch game-winning free throws.
 
Cal State LA will continue conference play with its first road game in CCAA play, at Cal State East Bay, on Monday.
