Golden Eagles Stay Unbeaten In Conference Play

HAYWARD – Cal State LA's women's basketball team enjoyed another sensational second-half performance Monday to remain unbeaten in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.
 
The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as seven points early in the third quarter before storming back for an impressive 78-67 win over Cal State East Bay in Pioneer Gym. Cal State LA (7-5, 4-0 CCAA) shot 56 percent over the final two quarters and outscored the Pioneers, 49-35, in the second half to erase a 32-29 halftime deficit.
 
Rikke Fabricius led three Golden Eagles in double figures with 24 points and five rebounds. Mackenzie Barnes had a season-high 17 points and eight rebounds in 31 key minutes off the bench and Da'Jah Jackson had another strong game with 12 points, five rebounds, two assists and three steals.
 
Shomari Harris had 24 points to lead Cal State East Bay (5-6, 2-2 CCAA). Remy Puou had 19 points and four rebounds.
 
Alma Serna had nine points and four rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Christine Delapina had seven points, two rebounds and two assists.
 
Cal State LA shot 51 percent for the game (25-of-49) and made four of their eight 3-point attempts. The Golden Eagles were also 24-of-31 from the free-throw line. Cal State East Bay shot 40.3 percent overall (27-of-67) and was just 4-of-16 from 3-point range. The Pioneers were 9-of-11 from the free-throw line.
 
Cal State East Bay had a 33-32 rebounding edge and committed 15 turnovers to 13 for the Golden Eagles.
 
Cal State LA trailed by as many as six points in the first quarter, but a basket by Jackson, two free throws by Barnes and one by Rachael DiRegolo cut the margin to 18-17 after one quarter.
 
The Golden Eagles took a 24-20 lead early in the second quarter, but needed a late 3-pointer by Jackson to trail by just three points, 32-29, at halftime.
 
Cal State LA quickly fell behind by seven points in the third quarter and still trailed, 42-37, after a three-point play by Harris. Fabricius countered with a three-point play for Cal State LA and the Golden Eagles used a 9-0 run later to take the lead for good. Five straight points by Barnes on a layup and a 3-pointer and a layup by DiRegolo gave the Golden Eagles a 49-44 advantage. A late free throw by Fabricius gave Cal State LA a 53-47 lead entering the final quarter.
 
The Pioneers battled back to tie it twice in the fourth quarter, the final time at 63-63, with 4:38 remaining. Cal State LA then scored the next nine points to take control of the contest. Delapina hit a pair of free throws to start the run and then hit a big 3-pointer to make it 68-63. Jackson made a layup after a steal and Fabricius made a pair of free throws to give the Golden Eagles a 72-63 lead with 2:19 to go.
 
Fabricius, Jackson and Delapina were perfect at the free-throw line in the final minute to complete the victory.
 
Cal State LA will now be off until a Thursday, Dec. 29 game at UC San Diego.
