Golden Eagles Get Non-Conference Win On The Road

FRESNO -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team got off to a quick start Saturday and never looked back in a non-conference win at Fresno Pacific.

Cal State LA (5-5) rebounded nicely from its loss to Sonoma State last weekend and led from start to finish. Fresno Pacific (1-8) cut the margin to six points at halftime, but the Golden Eagles quickly pushed the margin to 10 points early in the second half and led by double-digit margins for most of the game.

Travis Hammonds, who scored 35 points in Cal State LA's last game last Saturday, had a 23-point, 10-rebound double-double to lead the Golden Eagles, while Jordan Wilson and Jordan Nelson-Brown had 13 points each.

Two free throws by Frid gave the Golden Eagles their first double-digit lead, 18-8, and a layup by Miles Ford put the Golden Eagles ahead, 20-9. The Sunbirds rallied to pull within 34-30, but a 3-pointer by Wilson and two baskets by Hammonds pushed the lead back to 41-30. Cal State LA settled for a 41-35 lead at halftime.

Hammonds hit a 3-pointer to start the second half and Cal State LA was able to overcome every Fresno Pacific challenge. The Sunbirds got to within five points at 52-47, but a layup by Ford, a steal and layup by Hammonds and three straight points from Jonathan Davis extended the lead to 59-47. Then, after Fresno Pacific closed to within six points, Garrett Carter hit a 3-pointer to stop the run. A three-point play by Nelson-Brown made it 67-53 with seven minutes remaining and a 3-pointer by Nelson-Brown gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead, 77-60, with 2:23 to go.
