Golden Eagles Win A Fast-Paced Season Opener

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team picked up the pace in its 2016-17 season-opening victory.
 
The Golden Eagles scored early and often in an entertaining 97-80 win over Cal Lutheran Sunday in University Gym. Cal State LA (1-0) shot 58.6 percent in a game that featured 22 successful 3-pointers and 60 baskets in the game.
 
Travis Hammonds had a 23-point, 11-rebound double-double to lead the Golden Eagles, while Jordan Wilson had 21 points, six rebounds and seven assists. Roderick Evans-Taylor had 15 points and nine rebounds, while Miles Ford had 14 points and three steals.
 
Cal Lutheran of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference was led by Adrian Francis, who had 18 points and a pair of steals. Caleb Richey had 14 points and six assists, Austin Cole had 11 points and Wolfgang Wood had 10 points.

Geoffrey Frid had eight points, five rebounds and four blocks, while Joshua Hopkins had eight points and two rebounds.
 
Cal State LA trailed briefly in the first half, but went on a big run to take a 44-34 halftime lead. The Golden Eagles led by as many as 21 points in the second half and outscored the Kingsmen, 53-46, in the second period.
 
The Golden Eagles were 34-of-58 from the floor and made 11-of-21 from 3-point range. Hammonds was 5-for-7 from long-range. Cal State LA was also outstanding from the free-throw line, making 18-of-19 attempts. Cal Lutheran was 26-of-73 from the floor and made 11-of-29 from 3-point range. The Kingsmen were 17-of-25 from the free-throw line.
 
Cal State LA had a 41-35 rebounding edge, but committed 21 turnovers to 13 for Cal Lutheran.
 
Hammonds hit three early 3-pointers to stake Cal State LA to an early 11-4 lead, but Cal Lutheran responded and opened up a 25-21 advantage with 8:33 left in the half. Cal State LA, though, went on a 13-0 run to take the lead for good. Wilson started the run with a basket and a layup by Joshua Hopkins tied the score. Evans-Taylor then hit a 3-pointer to give the Golden Eagles the lead and that was followed by a layup by Hopkins, a jumper by Evans-Taylor and a pair of free throws by Wilson that made it 34-25.
 
A jumper by Daylin Billingsley gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead of the first half, 42-29, with 2:08 to go and Cal State LA settled for a 44-34 halftime lead.
 
DeSean Scott hit a pair of 3-pointers early in the second half to give the Golden Eagles a 55-36 lead and a jumper by Evans-Taylor gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead, 61-40, with 13:50 to go.
 
Cal State LA led by double-digit margins the rest of the way, although a 3-pointer by Kyle Feffeira cut the lead to 80-70 with 5:49 to go. A tip-in by Hammonds and a dunk by Evans-Taylor stopped the run and Cal State LA built its lead back up to 20 points after a layup by Ford with one minute left.
 
Cal State LA will return to action on Tuesday with a home game against Concordia beginning at 7:30 p.m. The game will be the second half of a doubleheader that begins with the Cal State LA women's basketball team facing Azusa Pacific at 5:30 p.m.
