LOS ANGELES – Cal State LA's men's soccer team saw a stunning turn of events result in their first loss of the 2016 season.
Just moments after a scoring bid by Cal State LA's
Samuel Croucher was stopped by San Francisco State goalkeeper Emmanuel Jimenez, the Gators got a dramatic, game-winning goal by Richard Leon with just eight seconds remaining in a 1-0 win over the Golden Eagles. After making the save on a re-direction by Croucher from inside the box, Jimenez sent a booming punt with time running down that Leon was able to corral deep in Cal State LA territory and then direct from a sharp angle inside the far post.
No. 12 Cal State LA (5-1-3, 3-1 CCAA) saw its season-long eight-match unbeaten streak come to a sudden end. San Francisco State (6-4, 3-3 CCAA) snapped a three-match losing streak. All three conference losses by the Gators were by 1-0 scores.
It was an evenly contested game throughout, filled with counter-attacks and strong defenses. Cal State LA had an 11-10 advantage in shots and a 6-2 edge in corner kicks, but could not get a shot past Jimenez. The San Francisco State goalkeeper made four saves, including the game-saver with 20 seconds remaining while on his back. Cal State LA goalkeeper
Dan Arnoll made two saves.
The Gators had an opening flurry in the first 15 minutes of the game, but did not score. KJ Ahlo had a header from fairly close that went just wide and Arnoll made a tremendous kick-save on a shot from point-blank range by Leon. The rebound went to Francisco Saucedo, but his header by the near post went wide.
Cal State LA began generating some attack later in the half and Jimenez had to make a save on a close shot by
Rigoberto Maciel. The Golden Eagles had another chance in the 30
th minute by
Antonio Rosas in a crowd that struck the far post and stayed out.
The Golden Eagles appeared to be getting the upper hand in the second half, but couldn't get a goal. Jimenez made a save on a hard Croucher shot in the 80
th minute and the Golden Eagles had a pair of corner kicks with less than five minutes remaining.
Hakon Laugsand had a good look go wide in the final minute and the Golden Eagles kept the pressure on before Croucher's bid was stopped in the waning seconds.
Cal State LA will return to action with a home match on Wednesday against Cal State Dominguez Hills at 7 p.m.
