SAN MARCOS -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team had a tough ending to a frustrating week.
The No. 12 Golden Eagles surrendered a goal in the 12th minute of the game and fell to Cal State San Marcos, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at The Cage. Cal State LA (7-3-3, 5-3 CCAA) slipped into a tie for sixth place in a tightly-packed California Collegiate Athletic Association with 15 points. The Golden Eagles are four points out of first, two out of second and one out of third with four conference games remaining. The top six teams will qualify for the CCAA Championship Tournament.
Cal State San Marcos (5-4-2, 4-2-2 CCAA) got the only goal of the game in the 12th minute when Eric Polland was able to collect a ball being battled for in a scrum in front of the net and tuck into the goal. It was Polland's first goal of the season.
The Cougars, who had twice as many fouls in the game as the Golden Eagles (18-9), were issued three yellow cards and a red in the contest and Cal State LA played with a man advantage for the final few minutes of the game. Cal State LA got a late shot from
Ihsan Kalkan in the 88th minute, but Cal State San Marcos was able to close out the game without a goal.
The shots were even, 9-9, and Cal State LA had a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Steven Eberle had a game-high three shots with one shot on goal.
Samuel Croucher had two shots, both on goal, while
Shahin Hemat and Kalkan also had shots on goal.
Steven Barrera made two saves in goal for the Golden Eagles. Justin Tesar made five saves for the Cougars.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a home game against Cal Poly Pomona at 7 p.m. There will be a pregame tailgate with food and giveaways.
