LOS ANGELES – Cal State LA's men's soccer team certainly created its share of chances Friday night in its California Collegiate Athletic Association match against Cal Poly Pomona, but the Golden Eagles still came out on the wrong side of a 1-0 decision.
The loss was a costly one for Cal State LA (7-4-3, 5-4 CCAA), which has fallen to seventh in a tightly-packed CCAA race with 15 points. The Golden Eagles are one point out of sixth place, while Cal Poly Pomona (10-3-2, 6-2-1) moves into fourth place with 19 points.
The result was a tough one for Cal State LA, which was able to effectively attack the left side of the Cal Poly Pomona defense and create some outstanding chances, especially in the first half. Jason Trejos stood tall for the Broncos in goal with six saves, while
Dan Arnoll also came up with some big stops and also had six saves.
Cal State LA had a 15-12 advantage, including a 10-4 edge in the first half. Cal Poly Pomona was able to score on its only real scoring chance of the first half, a header by Luis Najera Jr. that landed softly inside the far post with assists from Jose Garcia and Dante Medina.
Femi Kaffo had the first big scoring opportunity for the Golden Eagles in the 12
th minute when he broke free down the right side and sent a shot that seemed destined for the far corner of the net. Trejos was just able to get enough of the ball with a diving deflection that resulted in a corner kick.
Steven Eberle, had a shot from a sharp angle hit the outside of the post in the 36
th minute and then had a brilliant opportunity from in front that Trejos was able to somehow deflect over the goal for another Cal State LA corner kick.
Samuel Croucher also had two outstanding chances in the first half when he was able to run onto attempted clearances by Cal Poly Pomona defenders after corner kicks, but both opportunities sailed just high.
The Broncos were able to generate more offense in the second half to keep Cal State LA at bay, but Arnoll made a couple big saves.
The best scoring chance of the second half came from Eberle, who drilled a shot from inside the box that Trejos was able to somehow make a sliding save on to keep the ball from going in with about eight minutes to go.
Arnoll made strong saves on bids by Cal Poly Pomona's Sergi Monsi and Hussein Heidari in the final five minutes, but the Golden Eagles were unable to generate any more chances.
Cal State LA will play its final home game on Sunday against Cal State San Bernardino on Sunday at 2 p.m. The Golden Eagles will honor their three seniors –
Femi Kaffo,
Shahin Hemat and Troy Dumloa – in pregame ceremonies.
