LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team did some good work inside, but it wasn't enough to slow down UC San Diego Saturday night in the Eagles Nest.
The Golden Eagles put forth an improved effort in a 78-64 California Collegiate Athletic Association loss to the Tritons in the Eagles Nest. Cal State LA (2-12, 1-6 CCAA) got big games from
Geoffrey Frid and
Dushon Carter, but UC San Diego (12-2, 7-1 CCAA) had four players reach double figures while remaining in a tie for the conference lead.
Frid continued his strong play with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Carter was effective driving around UC San Diego's guards and taking high-percentage shots. Carter was an efficient 7-of-11, all within the 3-point arc.
Duce Zaid had nine points and six rebounds, while
Jonathan Davis was also effective inside, scoring nine points in 19 strong minutes.
Drew Dyer had 20 points and eight rebounds for UC San Diego, while Adam Klie had 19 points and five rebounds. Chris Hansen had 16 points and Aleks Lipovic had 10 points.
Cal State LA shot 40.8 percent for the game (20-of-49), but struggled from long-range again, making just 1-of-8 from 3-point distance. UC San Diego shot 50.9 percent (27-of-53) and made 7-of-23 from 3-point range. Cal State LA was 23-of-31 from the free-throw line, while UC San Diego was 17-of-24.
Cal State LA was outrebounded, 32-31 and committed 11 turnovers to only five for the Tritons.
The Golden Eagles grabbed a 22-19 lead following back-to-back baskets from Frid and Carter midway through the first half, but UC San Diego got a late 3-pointer from Dyer to take a 40-33 halftime lead.
Cal State LA got a nifty 3-point play from
Justin Snavely, who somehow tossed up a shot that went in as he was knocked to the floor and then made the free throw, to pull to within 55-47 with 11 minutes left, but that was as close as the Golden Eagles would get. A pair of free throws by Frid made it 59-51 with 8:25 to go, but UC San Diego scored the next five points and led by double-digit margins the rest of the way.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a home game against Cal Poly Pomona.
