LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team certainly made itself right at home in its season-opening tournament in the Eagles Nest.
The Golden Eagles completed an unbeaten performance in the Cal State L.A. Invitational on Saturday, sweeping Molloy in three sets early in the afternoon and then upending Seattle Pacific in the evening to go 4-0 over the two days.
In other matches on Saturday, Lewis swept Seattle Pacific and beat Dixie State in four sets, while Dixie State beat Molloy in three sets.
Cal State L.A. was 4-0 in the tourney, Lewis was 3-1, Dixie State was 2-2, Seattle Pacific was 1-3 and Molloy was 0-4.
The Golden Eagles started the day with a 25-12, 25-23, 25-14 win over Molloy. Cal State L.A. hit at a .462 percentage for the match and had 51 kills with only eight errors in 93 attempts.
Iona Lofrano had a match-high 16 kills and a .571 hitting percentage, while
JamieAnn Bero had 13 kills in just 16 attacks.
Kelsey Molnar had 29 set assists and
Sydney Kralj had 16 set assists and four digs.
Chloe Clancy had nine digs.
In their second match, the Golden Eagles withstood a stern challenge from NCAA Division II West Region opponent Seattle Pacific. After splitting the first two sets, the Golden Eagles pulled away late in both of the final two frames.
Lofrano led a balanced attack with 13 kills, while
Lauren Gomez and
Taylor Kushner had 10 kills each.
Angela Thurmond also had an effective match with seven kills in eight attempts.
Clancy had 18 digs, including a couple late in the fourth set that had the crowd buzzing in appreciation. Molnar had 32 set assists.
Cal State L.A. had a 55-38 edge in kills.
Cal State L.A. will return to action next week when the Golden Eagles visit Hawaii-Hilo for four matches over three days.
