LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team made a triumphant return to the Eagles Nest after their recent travels.
The Golden Eagles, in their first home match since a trip that saw them visit Hilo, Hawaii and Seaside, swept past previously unbeaten Stanislaus State, 25-9, 25-21, 25-20, Friday night in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (9-1, 2-0 CCAA) jumped out to leads in all three sets and held off the Warriors in the final two.
Iona Lofrano led an effective Cal State L.A. attack with 14 kills and nine digs, while
Lauren Gomez had eight kills and
JamieAnn Bero had seven kills and four blocks.
Blair Ehrlich had nine kills to lead the Warriors (7-1, 1-1 CCAA).
Kelsey Molnar had 30 set assists and three aces, while
Chloe Clancy had a match-high 12 digs.
Taylor Kushner had six kills and a .462 hitting percentage, while
Angela Thurmond had five kills and a .364 hitting percentage.
Cal State L.A. had a 44-28 advantage in kills and hit at a .296 percentage to just .157 for Cal State Stanislaus. The Golden Eagles also had a 5-2 edge in blocks and a 6-2 advantage in service aces.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a quick 14-4 lead in the opening set following an ace by Gomez and never looked back. The Golden Eagles held a 17-9 lead and then scored the final eight points of the set with Kushner and Lofrano combining for five kills.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the second set after a solo block by Bero, but Stanislaus State rallied to get within 14-11 and 15-12 before Cal State L.A. started on another run. A kill by Thurmond and an ace by Clancy stretched the lead to 17-12 and a kill by Kushner and a block by Kushner and Bero made it 20-12. The Warriors again rallied to get to within 24-21, but a kill by Lofrano ended the set.
Cal State L.A. once again jumped out to an early lead in the third set and took a 10-4 advantage after a block by Gomez and Bero. Stanislaus State was able to close to within 18-16 after a kill by Maddi Seidl, but a service error and a kill by Bero stretched the lead back to 20-16. The Golden Eagles got to set point after a kill by Gomez and a kill by Kushner ended the match.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a home match against Chico State at 7 p.m.
