Golden Eagles Suffer First Defeat Of 2015 Season

HILO, HI -- Cal State L.A.'s volleyball team saw its season-opening unbeaten streak come to a crashing end on Saturday in Hawaii.

The Golden Eagles, who had won their first seven matches of the season, fell to Chaminade, 25-22, 25-19, 27-25 at the Hilo Naniloa Hawaii Challenge. Cal State L.A. (7-1) had beaten Chaminade in straight sets on Friday, but the 'Swords turned the tables on Saturday.

Cal State L.A.'s 7-0 start to the season was the best for the program since a 9-0 start in the 2008 season.

Iona Lofrano had nine kills and eight digs for the Golden Eagles, while Taylor Kushner had seven kills and four digs and Lauren Gomez added seven kills.

Keani Passi had 12 kills for Chaminade (7-1).

Kelsey Molnar had 19 set assists and two aces for Cal State L.A.

Cal State L.A. hit at just a .127 percentage, while Chaminade hit at a .319 clip. Chaminade had a 44-35 edge in kills and a 7-5 advantage in blocks.

The Golden Eagles never could get untracked, although they did have opportunities in all three sets.

The Golden Eagles held a 22-20 lead in the opening set after a kill by JamieAnn Bero, only to see Chaminade rattle off the final five points of the set. It was the first time this season Cal State L.A. had dropped the opening set.

The Golden Eagles trailed for most of the second set, but trimmed a 17-12 deficit to just 17-15 after a block by Gomez and Bero and a kill by Molnar. Chaminade, though, scored the next three points and took the set going away.

Cal State L.A. had its chances to send the match to a fourth set, but came up short. The Golden Eagles led 11-6 after a kill by Gomez and still had a 15-11 advantage after an ace by Molnar. Chaminade, though, rallied and moved to a 24-22 lead. Cal State L.A. fought off the first two match points after kills by Lofrano and Angela Thurmond. A kill by Kushner erased a third match point and tied the set at 25-25, but Chaminade took the next two points to wrap up the match.

Cal State L.A. will open California Collegiate Athletic Association play on Tuesday at Cal State Monterey Bay.
