HILO, HI -- Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team got its three-day, four-match trip to Hawaii off to a strong start.
The Golden Eagles swept past Felician, 25-17, 25-18, 25-10, on Thursday afternoon in the Hilo Naniloa Hawaiian Challenge and then swept past host Hawaii-Hilo, 25-19, 26-24, 25-22 on Thursday evening. Cal State L.A. (6-0) used a balanced offensive attack late Thursday to subdue the Vulcans (0-1).
Iona Lofrano had 12 kills to lead the Golden Eagles in the win over Hawaii-Hilo, while
Taylor Kushner had 11 kills.
Angela Thurmond had 10 kills and
Lauren Gomez had nine kills.
Chloe Clancy led the Golden Eagles with a match-high 18 digs, while
Kelsey Molnar had 32 set assists and 13 digs.
Cal State L.A. had a 50-37 advantage in kills and hit at a .274 clip to .216 for Hawaii-Hilo.
The Golden Eagles pulled away late to take the opening set. Holding a 22-19 lead, the Golden Eagles closed out the set thanks to an attack error by the Vulcans and back-to-back kills by Thurmond and Kushner.
The second set was highly competitive. The Golden Eagles trailed 23-22 before kills by
JamieAnn Bero and Gomez gave them a 24-23 lead. After Hawaii-Hilo staved off a set point and tied it at 24-24, Cal State L.A. took advantage of a service error and an attack error to win the set.
The Golden Eagles opened up a 16-9 lead in the third set and then held off a Hawaii-Hilo rally. The Vulcans pulled to within two points, but couldn't pull even. The Golden Eagles took a 24-20 lead after a kill by Lofrano and then, after Hawaii-Hilo fought off two match points, ended the contest on a kill by Kushner.
In the opening win over Felician (1-4),
Iona Lofrano had 14 kills and four blocks to lead the way. Kushner had nine kills, while Bero and Thurmond had six kills each.
Cal State L.A. had a 46-19 advantage in kills and hit at a .372 percentage to just .024 for Felician.
The Golden Eagles had a 7-3 advantage in service aces.
Lexi Resch and Thurmond had two aces each to lead the team.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a match against Chaminade.
