The Golden Eagles managed only seven hits and were hurt by 10 costly walks in a 6-1 loss to UC San Diego in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game. Cal State L.A. (27-19, 22-16 CCAA) and UC San Diego (31-16, 26-12 CCAA) have split the first two games of the four-game conference series.
The Tritons, who lead the nation in walks, got a big boost in that department on Friday. Cal State L.A. starter
Brandon Quintero, recently back from injury, never did look comfortable on the mound and allowed six hits and three runs while walking eight and striking out six in 4 1/3 innings.
UC San Diego starter Trevor Scott, meanwhile, allowed seven hits and only a solo home run by Cal State L.A.'s
Josh Guerra in the fifth inning. He walked only one and struck out eight.
Guerra's pinch-hit home run cut the deficit to 3-1, but UC San Diego added three runs in the sixth inning and the Golden Eagles were unable to score after Guerra's home run.
Marcos Casillas tossed 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for the Golden Eagles.
Kyle Peralta was 2-for-3, while
Trent Zaks,
Jesus Cuevas,
Dakota Hernandez,
Trevor Meleski and Guerra each had one hit each for Cal State L.A.
Brett Levy was 1-2 with three walks for UC San Diego and also had a big two-run single as part of the Tritons' three-run uprising in the sixth. Michael Mann was 2-for-5 and Jack Larsen was 2-for-4 with two runs scored for UC San Diego.
Quintero avoided major damage by stranding eight runners on base in his first four innings of work. He got out of a bases-loaded, nobody out jam in the first with a pair of strikeouts and a groundout, but UC San Diego got run-scoring singles by Gradeigh Sanchez and Michael Mann to take a 2-0 lead in the second. A run-scoring double by Justin Flatt made it 3-0 in the third.
Guerra broke through for the Golden Eagles with a solo home run in the fifth, his second of the season.
That was it for Cal State L.A., though, and UC San Diego added three more runs in the sixth to account for the final score.
Cal State L.A. will conclude its conference schedule with a doubleheader at UC San Diego beginning at 2 p.m.
