TURLOCK -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team didn't enjoy the extra innings the Golden Eagles had to play in their series opener at Cal State Stanislaus.
The Golden Eagles let a late 3-1 lead get away and ultimately lost to the Warriors, 5-3, in 11 innings in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game at Warrior Baseball Field. Cal State L.A. (22-11, 17-8 CCAA) fell out of a share of the conference lead with the loss, while Cal State Stanislaus (15-19, 10-14 CCAA) won its fifth straight game.
Greg Humbert had an outstanding start for the Golden Eagles and allowed only four hits and one run over seven strong innings. He walked only one, struck out six and left with a 3-1 lead. The Warriors, though, tied it with two runs in the eighth, the tying run crossing the plate after Skippy Ferreria was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The Warriors then won it in the 11th on a game-winning two-run home run by Patrick Mulry.
Nick Osuna was 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Golden Eagles, while
Jesus Cuevas was 1-for-4 with a solo home run.
Dakota Hernandez and
Kyle Peralta each had a hit and a run scored.
Cal State L.A. picked up seven hits in the game, while Cal State Stanislaus had nine. The Golden Eagles stranded 10 baserunners.
The Golden Eagles broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning when Osuna delivered a bases-loaded, two-out, two-run single that drove in Hernandez and Peralta.Cal State Stanislaus countered with its only run off of Humbert in the bottom of the inning on doubles by Marcus Mastrobuoni and Michael Chavarria.
Cuevas, though, gave the Golden Eagles a 3-1 lead in the fifth with a solo home run, his third of the season.
The score stayed that way as Humbert kept the advantage through seven innings. The Warriors, though, took advantage of a pair of hits, two walks and a hit batter in the eighth to tie it and then won it on Mulry's home run in the 11th.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a doubleheader at Cal State Stanislaus with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
