LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team got another exceptional pitching performance on Monday to finish its four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series with Cal State Monterey Bay in style.
Bryan Conant pitched 8 2/3 strong innings and was backed by a 10-hit offensive attack in Cal State L.A.'s 5-1 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay at Reeder Field. Cal State L.A. (15-9, 10-6 CCAA) bounced back from an extra-inning loss in the opening game to win the final three games of the series.
Conant allowed seven hits and one run and blanked the Otters on just four hits over his final 6 2/3 innings of work. He got the first two outs of the ninth inning and was taken out after allowing an infield single.
Mitchell Moore, in his first outing of the season, got the final out.
Ryan Welker had three hits to lead Cal State L.A.'s 10-hit attack, while
Trent Zaks was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Jesus Cuevas also had two hits, while
Kyle Peralta delivered a big two-run single in the fifth inning that gave the Golden Eagles a 5-1 lead.
Kevin Davidson had three hits for Cal State Monterey Bay (18-10, 14-6 CCAA). Cody Gappa gave up eight hits and four earned runs in six innings for the Otters.
Cal State Monterey Bay took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a run-scoring single by Matt Urakami, but the Golden Eagles took the lead for good with two runs in the third. Welker singled in one run and Zaks scored on a passed ball to make it 2-1.
Conant was outstanding for the duration of his start and allowed only two hits – singles in the sixth and ninth innings.
Cal State L.A. gave him some breathing room with three runs in the fifth. Cuevas made it 3-1 with a double that drove in Zaks and Peralta had a clutch two-out, two-run single to make it 5-1.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with the opener of a four-game series at Cal State East Bay.
