Golden Eagles Fall In Extra Innings To Otters

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team saw a lot of good work end up in a disappointing extra-inning loss Saturday night in the opener of a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series.

The Golden Eagles banged out 15 hits against four Cal State Monterey Bay pitchers, but Cal State L.A. stranded 16 runners in a 6-5 11-inning loss to the Otters at Reeder Field. Cal State L.A. (12-9, 7-6 CCAA) lost its fifth straight game, but not without a battle. The Golden Eagles erased a 5-1 deficit to send the game into extra innings, but couldn't get the winning run.

Rodrigo Martinez went 4-for-6 with one run scored and one RBI and Kyle Peralta was 3-for-6 with one run scored and one RBI. Josh Guerra came on as a pinch hitter and wound up going 2-for-3 with a run scored and one RBI.

All 15 Cal State L.A. hits were singles, while Cal State Monterey Bay (18-7, 14-3 CCAA) had 11 hits, including a pair of doubles and home runs by Kevin Davidson and Matt Urakami. Davidson's home run in the top of the 11th inning broke the 5-5 tie.

Jacob Cox allowed two hits and no runs over the final four innings to get the win for the Otters, while Chris Oropesa allowed just the one hit and one run over the final two innings for the Golden Eagles.

Marcos Casillas pitched well in relief for the Golden Eagles, allowing no runs while striking out three over 2 1/3 innings.

Both starters had to work hard to make it through five innings on Saturday and neither figured in the decision. Cal State L.A.'s Brandon Quintero allowed seven hits and four runs – only two of them earned – while walking two and striking out six. Cal State Monterey Bay's Greg Steinbeck also allowed seven hits and gave up one unearned run while walking four and striking out one.

The two teams combined for 26 hits, 13 walks, two hit batters and 28 runners left on base.

The Otters took advantage of a miscue on a double play grounder to score two times in the second and got a run in the third on a run-scoring double by Chris Blanton to make it 3-0. The Otters got another run in the fourth on a solo home run by Urakami to right to make it 4-0.

The Golden Eagles finally pushed across a run in the fourth on a fielder's choice by Martinez that drove in Lawrence Dominguez. Cal State L.A., though, left 11 runners on base through the first five innings.

The Golden Eagles spotted another run to the Otters in the sixth to make it 5-1 before scoring three times in the sixth to draw close. Guerra had a run-scoring single, Paul Martinez grounded out to first to drive in another run and Dakota Hernandez singled in another run to make it 5-4.

The Golden Eagles tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on a RBI groundout by Peralta and neither team scored again until the 11th inning.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a doubleheader against Cal State Monterey Bay beginning at 1 p.m.
