SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State L.A.'s four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series against San Francisco State got off to rocky start Friday at Maloney Field.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but San Francisco State scored seven straight runs and never looked back in a 9-5 win. Cal State L.A. (9-3, 4-1 CCAA) had an eight-game winning streak snapped and lost for the first time in conference play. San Francisco State (3-8, 2-3 CCAA) collected 13 hits and limited the Golden Eagles to just two runs after the second inning.
Trent Zaks hit a leadoff home run in the ninth inning for the Golden Eagles, who picked up eight hits.
David Trejo was 2-for-4 with two RBI, while
Nick Osuna was 2-for-4 with one run scored.
Brandon Quintero, who was sensational last week in a series-opening win over Sonoma State, was unable to make it out of the third inning on Friday. He allowed five hits and four runs while walking two and striking out three.
Greg Humbert worked five innings and gave up six hits and four earned runs and
Reed Reznicek allowed two hits and a walk and also struck out three in the eighth inning.
The Golden Eagles struck for three runs in the top of the second inning. Trejo delivered a two-run single with the bases loaded to drive in Osuna and
Jesus Cuevas and
Paul Martinez also scored on the play after a throwing error.
The Gators, though, got two back in the bottom of the second inning to make it 3-2 and then took the lead with a pair of runs in the third. Bryce Cherry's two-run single put the Gators in front. San Francisco State added two runs in the fifth when the Golden Eagles were unable to turn an inning-ending double play and the Gators made it 7-3 when Jacob Lopez stole home as part of a double steal in the sixth.
Cal State L.A. made it 7-4 in the seventh on a run-scoring single by
Dakota Hernandez, but San Francisco State added two more in the eighth on run-scoring singles by Lopez and Cherry.
Zaks finished up the scoring with a solo home run leading off the ninth.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a doubleheader at San Francisco beginning at 11 a.m.
