ARCATA -- Cal State LA's volleyball team was unable to hold on to an early lead against Humboldt State in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match Friday in Lumberjack Arena.
The Golden Eagles took the first set and led as late as 19-18 in the second set, but the 'Jacks roared back to win in four sets, 22-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-18. Cal State LA dropped both matches this week on the road in four sets after also falling to No. 23 Sonoma State on Wednesday.
Iona Lofrano had 13 kills and 10 digs for Cal State LA (15-7, 7-6 CCAA), while
JamieAnn Bero had 11 kills and
Lauren Gomez had 10 kills and eight digs.
Symone Hayden had 26 kills to lead Humboldt State (8-10, 6-8 CCAA), while Kaitlyn Dunaway had 15 kills and 14 digs.
Kelsey Molnar had eight kills and 28 set assists and
Taylor Kushner had seven kills and three aces for the Golden Eagles.
Makayla Taylor had a team-high 11 digs.
Humboldt State had a slim 58-57 edge in kills and outhit the Golden Eagles, .324 - .291. The 'Jacks also had a 7-3 edge in blocks and had nine services aces to four serving errors. Cal State LA had seven aces and six service errors.
The Golden Eagles raced out to a 15-7 lead in the opening set following a block by Molnar and
Mia Alcaraz and still had a 20-13 advantage after a kill by Kushner. Humboldt State, though, closed to within 23-22 before a bad set and a kill by Gomez gave the Golden Eagles the set.
Cal State LA had a 19-18 lead in the second set after a kill by
Chloe Clancy and were still tied at 20-20 after a kill by Molnar. Humboldt State, though, scored the final five points of the set to even the match.
Cal State LA never recovered from a slow start in the third set. After falling behind 18-12, the Golden Eagles pulled to within 23-22 after a kills by Gomez and Lofrano and a kill by Lofrano made it 24-23, but the 'Jacks got a kill by Hayden to take the set and the lead in the match.
The Golden Eagles fell into a huge hole in the fourth set and were unable to rally. Cal State LA trailed 19-6 and 20-7 and pulled to within 21-16 after a kill by
Lexi Resch, but couldn't get any closer.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a home match against Cal State Dominguez Hills at 7 p.m. in the Golden Eagles' annual "Dig For A Cure" match.
