ROHNERT PARK -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team got a career night from
Iona Lofrano, but had to accept a hard-fought California Collegiate Athletic Association loss to No. 23 Sonoma State.
The Golden Eagles managed to put up a good battle after dropping the first two sets by wide margins, but the Seawolves shut the door in the fourth set and prevailed, 25-17, 25-17, 15-25, 25-23 Wednesday night in The Wolves Den. Cal State LA (15-6, 7-5 CCAA) threatened to set the match into a fifth set after grabbing a 21-20 lead in the fourth, but Sonoma State (15-3, 11-1 CCAA) ultimately broke a 23-23 tie with consecutive kills to end the match.
Lofrano had an outstanding performance in the loss. She tied a career-high with 27 kills and set a new career high with 24 digs. She also recorded four blocks and hit at a sizzling .455 percentage with the 27 kills and just two errors in 55 attacks. Lofrano tied her previous high kill total that she accomplished in five sets against Humboldt State as a sophomore in 2013.
JamieAnn Bero had 11 kills and three blocks for the Golden Eagles and also hit at a .455 percentage.
Lauren Gomez added nine kills.
Caylie Seitz had 16 kills for the Seawolves, while Madelyn Densberger had 11 kills.
Sonoma State had a 61-59 edge in kills, while Cal State LA hit at a .282 percentage to .280 for the Seawolves. Cal State LA had a 9.5 - 6.0 edge in blocks. Sonoma State was much more effective serving, recording seven aces and no errors, while Cal State LA had just one ace and four errors.
Makayla Taylor had 19 digs for the Golden Eagles, while
Sydney Kralj had 41 set assists.
None of the first three sets was close as Sonoma State took the first two and Cal State LA took the third. In the opening frame, Sonoma State jumped out to a 20-10 lead and the Seawovles had a commanding 20-13 edge in the second. Cal State LA responded with a dynamic third set, hitting .472 in the frame, led by Lofrano, who had nine kills and a .600 hitting percentage in the third set alone.
The fourth set was tight throughout. The Golden Eagles rallied from a 19-16 deficit and, after pair of kills by Lofrano and a pair of errors by the Seawolves, took a 20-19 lead. Kills by Lofrano tied the set at 21-21 and 22-22 and a kill by Bero tied it for a final time at 23-23. Sonoma State, though, got consecutive kills from Densberger and Emily Papale to end the match.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a match at Humboldt State.
