LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team finally got some offense on Friday to add to its steady-as-usual defensive effort.
The Golden Eagles scored two goals in a game for the first time this season and beat Cal State San Marcos, 2-0, Friday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State L.A. (2-5-1, 2-2-1 CCAA) won its second straight game and also posted its second straight shutout.
The Golden Eagles started slowly, but got a goal late in the first half from
Katelyn Fregosi to take the lead and another in the 69
th minute from
Victoria Arredondo.
Adriana Maldonado made eight saves for the shutout, although most of the shots were from distance. Allie Jara made two saves for the Cougars.
Cal State San Marcos had a 13-10 advantage in shots, while Cal State L.A. had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Golden Eagles weren't getting anything done in the attack for most of the first half until a late foul on the Cougars gave Cal State L.A. a free kick deep in Cal State San Marcos territory.
Anahie Duran sent a dangerous ball into the box and
Tatiana Zuvic got it to Fregosi, who quickly kicked it into the net from point-blank range.
That was one of only three first-half shots for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State L.A. seemed more energized in the second half and the Golden Eagles' effort resulted in a second goal.
Ashli Villalobos started the play with a pass to a speeding Arredondo, who took the ball at full speed and drove to the goal. Her hard shot nestled just under the crossbar for her first goal of the season.
The defense took it from there and made it difficult for Cal State San Marcos to generate sustained pressure. The Cougars did have some potentially dangerous throw-ins late in the second half, but Cal State L.A. did a nice job of preventing quality scoring chances.
Cal State L.A. will return to action with a home game on Sunday against UC San Diego at 2 p.m.
