LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team weathered the storm, so to speak, Sunday before picking up a third straight California Collegiate Athletic Association victory.
The Golden Eagles got a big save from
Adriana Maldonado in the first half to keep things scoreless and
Danielle Telles converted a penalty kick in the 74
th minute to give Cal State L.A. a 1-0 win over UC San Diego at Jesse Owens Track.
Cal State L.A. (3-5-2, 3-2-1 CCAA) won its third straight game – all by shutout – and continued its recent strong play in the win on Sunday. The Golden Eagles were also able to avenge a 2-1 loss to the Tritons in La Jolla on Sept. 14.
UC San Diego (7-4, 3-3 CCAA) had a three-game winning streak snapped.
The Golden Eagles were awarded a penalty kick in the 74
th minute after
Ashli Villalobos was pulled down right in front of the UC San Diego goalmouth as she was poised to take a shot. Telles took the penalty kick and calmly booted it in for her third goal of the season and second via penalty kick.
Playing with the lead, the Golden Eagles made things tough for UC San Diego down the stretch and preserved their fourth shutout of the season.
Cal State L.A. got another strong game from Maldonado, who was at her best in the first half. She took care of several strong crosses early in the contest and then made the save of the match in the 25
th minute when she made a diving save of a point-blank shot by Kiera Bocchino.
The Golden Eagles started slowly and were probably fortunate to be even in the first half, although they also seemingly could have had a lead. After
Victoria Arredondo made a dangerous run into the box and took a shot that UC San Diego goalkeeper Kelcie Brodsky smothered, there appeared to be a hand-ball in the box although no call was made.
Cal State L.A. finally started to generate some opportunities in the second half and the speed of Arredondo in particular was troublesome for the Tritons. Five of UC San Diego's seven fouls came in the second half as the Golden Eagles applied some good pressure.
UC San Diego ended up with a 12-6 advantage in shots and Maldonado made seven saves for the Golden Eagles. Brodsky made two saves for the Tritons and a UC San Diego defender alertly cleared another attempt by
Alejah Valmonte off a corner kick by
Anahie Duran before it could become a goal.
Cal State L.A. had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks, taking all four in the second half as the Golden Eagles were finally able to sustain some possession and pressure.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Wednesday with a non-conference home game against Hawaii-Hilo beginning at 7 p.m.
