Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Golden Eagles Are Clutch In Overtime Once Again

SAN FRANCISCO – Cal State LA's women's soccer team used some overtime magic once again to pull out a key California Collegiate Athletic Association victory in San Francisco.

Tatiana Zuvic headed in a free kick in the second overtime period to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 victory over San Francisco State at Cox Stadium. Cal State LA (5-5-3, 5-2-1 CCAA) won its fifth straight conference game and ran its unbeaten streak to six overall.

The Golden Eagles got the late free kick on a call that was hotly disputed by San Francisco State. Veronika Steen took the free kick and it went first to Duran, who had the game-winning goal in overtime on Sunday against Chico State. This time, Duran flicked the ball over to Zuvic, who knocked home the winner.

It was the first goal of the season for Zuvic and the second assist for Duran. Steen recorded her second assist of the season.

San Francisco State (6-5-3, 2-3-3 CCAA) had a 14-12 advantage in shots, while Cal State LA had a 7-2 edge in corner kicks. Cal State LA goalkeeper Adriana Maldonado made three saves for her fifth shutout of the season. San Francisco State goalkeeper Karin Nordin made five saves and the Gators had a team save as well.

The Golden Eagles had a golden opportunity to win it in the first overtime as time was running down. Steen took a corner kick in the final minute and Katelyn Fregosi sent a shot toward the goal that was cleared away by a defender before it went in.

The Golden Eagles had some dangerous corner kicks during the game. Danya Hart had a shot blocked in the 12th minute off a corner kick by Steen and Alejah Valmonte sent a header high off a corner kick by Duran.

In the second half, Katarina Karabetsos also got off a shot off a Steen corner kick.

The Gators got the first two shots of the first overtime, but neither was on frame. Zuvic had a shot blocked a few minutes later and the Steen-Fregosi connection almost won the game before time ran out.

Then, after Duran was fouled in the second overtime, she picked herself up and assisted on the game-winning goal following Steen's free kick in the 104th minute.

Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with a conference game at Cal State Monterey Bay at 2 p.m.
