Golden Eagles Drop Conference Game To Otters

SEASIDE -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team saw its conference unbeaten streak come to an end Sunday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association loss to Cal State Monterey Bay.

The Golden Eagles surrendered goals in the opening minutes of each half and fell to the Otters, 2-1, in Seaside. Cal State LA managed only one shot in the opening half and just four shots in the game while losing in conference play for the first time since Sept. 25. Cal State LA (5-6-3, 5-3-1 CCAA) had won five straight conference games before Sunday and was 5-0-1 over its last six games overall.

Tatiana Zuvic scored a goal for the second straight game for Cal State LA. She had the game-winner in overtime in a win over San Francisco State on Friday.

Cal State LA is in a three-way tie for second place in the CCAA with three conference matches remaining. The top six teams will qualify for the CCAA Championships and the top two teams will earn first-round byes.

Cal State Monterey Bay (5-9-1, 2-6-1 CCAA) had a 7-4 edge in shots in the game, including a 4-1 advantage in the first half.

Adriana Maldonado had one save for the Golden Eagles, while Victoria Whyte had two saves for the Otters.

Cal State LA allowed more than one goal in a game for just the third time this season.

The Golden Eagles struggled to generate offense on Sunday and didn't get a shot until Ashli Villalobos had a try in the 44th minute.

The Otters scored just 1:40 into the game when Michelle Garrone came up with the ball after a scrum in the box and knocked it into the net.

Cal State Monterey Bay made it 2-0 in the 47th minute on a counter attack. Kristen Womack got the goal with an assist from Reyan Porteous.

The Golden Eagles sliced the lead in half when Zuvic scored in the 56th minute, but Cal State LA managed only one shot the rest of the way, an attempt by Shea Hoover that was stopped by Whyte. The only other Cal State LA shot in the game came from Daisy Macias.

Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a road game at Cal State Dominguez Hills at 7 p.m.
