Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Golden Eagles Work Overtime Again For Big CCAA Win

CARSON -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team had to work overtime once again - and then some - to pick up its latest California Collegiate Athletic Association victory.

The Golden Eagles got the game-winning goal in the second overtime period from Victoria Arredondo to beat Cal State Dominguez Hills, 2-1, Friday night at Stub Hub Center Field #3. Arredondo received a pass from Anahie Duran in the 107th minute, dribbled a bit and then knocked a shot that was deflected by the Cal State Dominguez Hills goalkeeper before settling into the goal. It was Arredondo's second goal of the season and it came at a most opportune time.

Cal State LA (6-6-3, 6-3-1 CCAA) remains in third place in the CCAA with two matches remaining. The Golden Eagles are three points behind second-place UC San Diego, which has completed its conference schedule.

The top six teams will qualify for the CCAA Championship Tournament.

The Golden Eagles continued to live on the edge. Cal State LA's last three victories have all come in extra time and Duran has played a role in all three. It started when Duran scored an overtime winner in a 3-2 victory over Chico State. She then had an assist on Tatiana Zuvic's game-winning goal in the second overtime of a 1-0 win at San Francisco State last Friday and had the assist as well on Arredondo's game-winner against Cal State Dominguez Hills (2-11-1, 1-8-1 CCAA). It was a tough ending for the Toros, who erased a 1-0 halftime deficit and frustrated the Golden Eagles in the second half. The Toros were coming off their first conference win of the season last Sunday against San Francisco State.

Cal State Dominguez Hills had a 16-9 advantage in shots, including a 7-2 advantage in the second half. Both teams had four shots each in the overtime periods. Cal State LA had a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal.

The Toros also had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.

Katarina Karabetsos opened the scoring in the 34th minute when she knocked in a rebound of a shot by Katelyn Fregosi. The play started on a corner kick by Duran that was headed by Fregosi toward Karabetsos, who finished for her first goal of the season. Those two shots were the first two of the game at that point for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State Dominguez Hills tied it in the 68th minute on a goal by Gabrielle Pena and the Toros did a good job of limiting Cal State LA's attack in the second period.

Duran had an outstanding chance to win the game for the Golden Eagles in the first overtime, but had a shot stopped by Cal State Dominguez Hills defender Lindsay Armstrong.

Adriana Maldonado had two saves for the Golden Eagles, including one in the 102nd minute by Johanna Rosas.

The game remained tied until Duran set up the speedy Arredondo, who hit a shot that Cal State Dominguez goalkeeper Alexia Flippen was able to deflect, but not keep out of the goal.

Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a game at Stanislaus State at 4:30 p.m.
