Golden Eagles Clinch Tourney Spot With Road Win

TURLOCK -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team punched its ticket to the six-team California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament with a clutch road win Thursday at Cal State Stanislaus.

The Golden Eagles got a second-half goal from Tatiana Zuvic and another outstanding defensive effort to post a 1-0 victory over the Warriors at Warrior Field. The Golden Eagles had to sweat out a late bid by the Warriors in the waning seconds. Adriana Maldonado was able to get a piece of a shot by Mikayla Clifford that ultimately hit the crossbar and the Golden Eagle defense was there to prevent another shot and preserve the win.

Cal State LA (7-6-3, 7-3-1 CCAA) is in a three-way tie for second with Chico State and UC San Diego heading into the final regular-season game on Saturday at Cal State East Bay. All three teams have 22 points. The Golden Eagles can clinch the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye with a victory on Saturday. Cal State LA cannot finish lower than third so the Golden Eagles will either earn a bye or host a first-round tournament match on Tuesday at Jesse Owens Track.

The game was a battle between the 2014 CCAA Champions (Cal State LA) and the 2014 NCAA Division II West Region champions (Stanislaus State) and the outcome was always in doubt.

Zuvic picked up her third goal of the season - all of them in the last four games - after a dangerous corner kick from Veronika Steen that sailed into the box. Zuvic was able to rifle a shot through a crowd and into the net in the 63rd minute. Steen picked up her team-leading fourth assist of the season and she also took over the team scoring lead with eight points.

The Golden Eagles had some solid possession in the second half after a slow first half, but Stanislaus State (9-5-3, 4-4-3 CCAA) did have a solid scoring chance by Kirsten Coleman on a two-on-one break, but Maldonado handled her hard shot. The Warriors then had the shot hit the crossbar in the last frantic seconds, but the Golden Eagles were able to keep Coleman from getting a chance on the rebound.

Stanislaus State had a 14-7 advantage in shots, including a 6-2 edge in the first half. The Golden Eagles had a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Cal State LA recorded its sixth shutout of the season and won its seventh conference game in its last eight matches. The Golden Eagles are 7-1-1 over their last nine games after starting the season 0-5-2.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a game at Cal State East Bay at 11:30 a.m.

Maldonado made three saves in goal for the Golden Eagles, while Chelsea Lewandowski made one save for the Warriors.
