HAYWARD -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team had a chance to earn a bye for the first round of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament with a victory on Saturday, but the Golden Eagles were forced to settle for a tie and will now host a first-round match on Tuesday.
The Golden Eagles couldn't generate any offense against Cal State East Bay and the game ended in a 0-0 tie. Cal State LA (7-6-4, 7-3-2 CCAA) finished their conference schedule with 23 points and placed third in the conference. Chico State, which entered the day tied with the Golden Eagles with 22 points, beat San Francisco State to finish second with 25 points. Sonoma State completed an unbeaten conference schedule and earned the No. 1 seed..
Cal State LA will host No. 6 seed Stanislaus State in a first-round game on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. No. 4 seed UC San Diego will host No. 5 seed Cal Poly Pomona in the other first-round match. The semi-finals and finals will be held at Cal Poly Pomona on Friday and Sunday.
Cal State LA recorded its seventh shutout of the season and the Golden Eagles finished the regular season with a 7-1-2 record over their final 10 games.
The Golden Eagles started well and had a 4-1 edge in shots after the first half. Cal State East Bay (5-12-1, 3-8-1 CCAA) began to generate more pressure after the break and wound up with a 15-10 advantage in shots. The Pioneers had an 8-3 edge in the second half and a 2-0 edge in the first overtime. The Pioneers also had a 4-3 advantage in the second overtime period.
Adriana Maldonado had three saves for the Golden Eagles, while Katelyn Oshima had four saves for the Pioneers.
Veronika Steen had a team-high five shots for the Golden Eagles, while
Ashli Villalobos and
Anahie Duran had two shots each.
