LOS ANGELES – Cal State LA's women's soccer team saw the tables get turned Tuesday night in a first-round California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament first-round game.
Less than a week after posting an impressive 1-0 victory over Stanislaus State in Turlock, the Golden Eagles found themselves on the wrong side of a 1-0 decision at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State LA (7-7-4), the No. 3 seeds, was unable to generate much of an attack Tuesday against a stout Stanislaus State defense.
The Golden Eagles also played some solid defense on Tuesday and Stanislaus State (11-5-3) was kept off the board until the 88
th minute when Maryssa McDuffy was able to knock in a cross from Amanda Woodhouse to give the Warriors the win.
Last week, it was Cal State LA that controlled play in the second half before ultimately beating Stanislaus State, 1-0, on a goal by
Tatiana Zuvic in the 63
rd minute in Turlock. On Tuesday, it was the Warriors who had the bulk of the possession in the second half before finally getting the game-winner. Stanislaus State had a 7-0 advantage in shots in the second half and wound up with a 9-2 advantage overall.
Both teams had three corner kicks.
Cal State LA, which was so good on set pieces throughout the season, had a late bid with a corner kick in the final minute, but Stanislaus State was able to clear the ball away from danger without a shot to preserve its lead.
Adriana Maldonado made two saves for the Golden Eagles, while Chelsea Lewandowski didn't need to make a save for the shutout.
Veronika Steen and
Anahie Duran had the shots for Cal State LA.
The game on Tuesday was a matchup between the 2014 CCAA Champions (Cal State LA) and the NCAA Division II West Region champs (Stanislaus State).
The Warriors now advance to face No. 2 seed Chico State in the semi-finals on Friday at Cal Poly Pomona.
Cal State LA finished the season well with a 7-2-2 record over its final 11 games. Nearly the entire Golden Eagle roster returns next season with only four seniors –
Jackeline Lopez,
Katelyn Fregosi,
Shelby Nieto and
Kamille Cawley – completing their eligibility.
