Golden Eagles Hold Leads In Win Over Monterey Bay

SEASIDE -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team made sure to hold the lead Friday in its California Collegiate Athletic Association game at Cal State Monterey Bay.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to a quick 9-2 lead and never looked back in a 70-61 win over the Otters. Cal State L.A. (4-7, 3-4 CCAA). Cal State L.A. snapped a four-game losing streak with the road victory.

The Golden Eagles, who were unable to hold leads last week in losses at Cal State San Bernardino and conference-leading Humboldt State, played much better with the lead on Friday. After breaking a 2-2 tie with seven straight points, Cal State L.A. led the rest of the way.

The Golden Eagles built a 35-22 halftime lead and kept the Otters (3-9, 1-6 CCAA) at arm's length the rest of the way.

Franeka Hall had a game-high 21 points to lead the Golden Eagles. Hall was 8-of-11 from the floor, including an efficient 4-of-6 showing from behind 3-point range. Chiara DiMarco also had a strong game with 18 points, while Kiah Knox had 10 points.

Jenna Bandy had 15 points and 10 rebounds for Cal State Monterey Bay, while McKenna Hill had 14 points and Jazmine Johnson had 10.

Aiwekhoe Okungbowa had seven points and a team-high 10 rebounds for the Golden Eagles.

The Golden Eagles were tied at 2-2 before a basket by DiMarco, a free throw by Bree Parsons, a layup by Ali Orlich and a basket by Knox sparked a 7-0 run that put them ahead for good. The Otters got to within 21-18, but the Golden Eagles closed the half with a 14-4 run to open up a 35-22 lead at halftime. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Hall and DiMarco pushed the lead to 31-20 and a layup by DiMarco gave the Golden Eagles their 13-point halftime lead.

A 3-pointer by DiMarco and two free throws by Okungbowa gave the Golden Eagles a 40-25 lead and a layup by Hall made it 48-33 with 10:45 remaining.

The Golden Eagles saw the Otters close to within 58-51 before Hall hit a big 3-pointer with 3:35 to go.t The Otters got to within seven points once again, but a pair of free throws by Samantha Lee stopped the run and gave the Golden Eagles a 63-54 lead with 1:04 to go. DiMarco hit four free throws, Orlich made one and Shanice Jackson hit two in the final minute to preserve the lead.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a road game at Cal State East Bay.
