HAYWARD -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team started slowly, but roared back to complete an important California Collegiate Athletic Association road sweep.
The Golden Eagles surrendered the first 11 points of the game, but rallied to take the lead by halftime and went on to a 71-63 victory over Cal State East Bay Saturday night in Pioneer Gym. Cal State L.A. (5-7, 4-4 CCAA) entered the week with a four-game losing streak, but pulled to .500 in conference play with wins over Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State East Bay.
Aiwekhoe Okungbowa led the way with a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double, while
Franeka Hall had another big game with 14 points and six rebounds.
Kaija Powell added 11 points and
Chiara DiMarco had nine points.
Stephanie Lopez led Cal State East Bay (9-5, 4-4 CCAA) with a game-high 24 points, while Tori Breshers had 10 points.
Shanice Jackson had a strong game for the Golden Eagles and contributed seven points and four rebounds.
Cal State L.A., after its slow start, heated up and finished the game shooting 43.8 percent (21-of-48). Cal State East Bay shot 43.4 percent (23-of-53). The Golden Eagles knocked down 7-of-19 from 3-point range, while the Pioneers were 6-of-14 from behind the arc. Cal State L.A. also had a productive game at the free-throw line and made 22-of-29 attempts while Cal State East Bay made 11-of-16.
The Golden Eagles didn't score until Okungbowa hit a pair of free throws to make it 11-2. Cal State L.A. got its first basket when Hall made a layup to make it 11-4 eight minutes into the game. A 3-pointer by Jackson cut the deficit to 15-14, but the Golden Eagles didn't take their first lead until a 9-0 run late in the half. A pair of Okungbowa free throws started the run, a 3-pointer by
Samantha Lee made it 27-26, a layup by Powell gave the Golden Eagles a 28-27 lead and two free throws by Okungbowa made it 30-27. Two free throws by Lee gave the Golden Eagles a 32-28 halftime lead.
The Pioneers cut the deficit to 34-32, but
Ali Orlich got the Golden Eagles back on track with a 3-pointer to make it 37-32. The Pioneers closed to within 37-35, but a free throw by Powell and layups by Hall, Powell and Okungbowa stretched the lead to 44-35. A three-point play by Okungbowa gave the Golden Eagles their first double-digit lead at 47-37.
Cal State L.A. had to fight off another Cal State East Bay charge that made it 54-50 before a 3-pointer by Hall, two free throws by Powell and a jumper by Hall stretched the lead to 61-50. Alyssa Palma made back-to-back 3-pointers for Cal State East Bay to slice the lead to 61-56 with 1:42 remaining, but
Bree Parsons hit a clutch shot with 1:25 to go to stop the run. Okungbowa added a pair of free throws and DiMarco nailed a 3-pointer to put the game out of reach, 68-56, with 43 seconds remaining.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a home game against UC San Diego beginning at 5:30 p.m.
