Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Golden Eagles Fall Victim To Second Half Rally

ARCATA -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team was in position for a big road upset, but California Collegiate Athletic Association leader Humboldt State had other ideas.

The Golden Eagles surged to a 45-33 halftime lead and had a 50-35 second-half advantage before the 'Jacks roared back for an 81-67 victory in Lumberjack Arena. Cal State L.A. (3-7, 2-4 CCAA) was still within striking range, trailing just 64-62 with 4:22 left, but Humboldt State (10-1, 6-0 CCAA) scored the next 14 points to put the game away.

Aiwekhoe Okungbowa led four Golden Eagles in double figures with 15 points, while Kiara Harewood had 14 points and nine rebounds. Chiara DiMarco had 14 points and Ali Orlich had 10 points.

A'Jaee Foster had a game-high 21 points for the conference-leading 'Jacks, who also had four players reach double figures. Megan Shields had 13 points, Amanda Kunst had 11 points and Neika Puryear had 10 points.

The game was obviously a tale of two halves and there was only one lead change in the entire contest. Cal State L.A. shot 54.3 percent in the first half while racing out to a 45-33 halftime lead. The Golden Eagles made half of their eight 3-point attempts and had a 24-13 rebounding edge. The first-half lead would have been even larger if not for Humboldt State knocking down 12 of its 15 first-half free throw attempts while Cal State L.A. was just 3-of-7.

In the second half, though, Humboldt State shot 50 percent (13-of-26), while Cal State L.A. shot just 32 percent (8-of-25). The Golden Eagles were also just 1-of-11 from 3-point range in the second half and Humboldt State also had a 20-16 rebounding edge while hitting 19-of-27 from the free-throw line.

For the game, Cal State L.A. shot 45 percent (27-of-60) and was 5-of-19 from 3-point range (26.3 percent), while Humboldt State shot 42.6 percent (23-of-54) and was 4-of-21 from 3-point range. The 'Jacks had a big edge at the free-throw line, making 31-of-42 attempts to just 8-of-19 for the Golden Eagles.

The Golden Eagles had a 40-33 rebounding edge, but also had 25 turnovers to 15 for the 'Jacks.

The Golden Eagles had an exceptional first half and took a 26-13 lead halfway through the first period after five consecutive points from Bree Parsons. The Golden Eagles restored their double-digit lead after a 3-pointer by Orlich made it 39-28 and baskets by Parsons and Harewood gave the Golden Eagles a 45-33 halftime lead.

Cal State L.A. took its biggest lead of the game at 50-35 after a basket by DiMarco and a three-point play by Okungbowa with 18:23 to go. Humboldt State began chipping away at the lead, although Cal State L.A. still had a 58-50 lead after a basket by DiMarco with 10 minutes to play. Humboldt State scored the next seven points before a layup by Kiah Knox kept the Golden Eagles ahead, 60-57, with 6:12 remaining. The 'Jacks, though, went on another 7-0 run to take the lead for good.

A 3-pointer by Orlich sliced the Golden Eagles' deficit to 64-62 with 4:22 remaining, but Humboldt State went on a game-deciding 14-0 run over the next three minutes. A pair of free throws by Franeka Hall stopped the run, but by then only 1:08 was left in the game.

Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with another conference road game at Cal State Monterey Bay.
