Golden Eagles Have Mixed Results In Tourney

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SEATTLE – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team enjoyed its early wake-up call on Friday in the Seattle Pacific Tournament, but it's evening outing didn't go quite as planned.
 
The Golden Eagles got off to a strong start and never let up in a 25-15, 25-11, 25-17 victory over Dixie State in a match that began at 9:30 a.m., but the Golden Eagles fell behind early to Seattle Pacific in a match that begin after 8 p.m. and fell, 25-17, 25-19, 25-19 to the tournament hosts. and was over in an hour.
 
In its first match of the day, Cal State L.A. (2-1) limited Dixie State, which was an NCAA Division II Tournament participant last year out of the Pacific West Conference, to a negative hitting percentage of -.009. The Golden Eagles, after hitting just .042 in the opening set, hit at clips of .400 and .303 in the final two sets.
 
Iona Lofrano led the way with 12 kills and four blocks and had a hitting percentage of .458. Kymberly Silveyra added six kills and 10 digs. April Reyes had a match-high 15 digs and Sydney Kralj had 27 set assists and five digs.

Cal State L.A. had a slim 32-28 edge in kills, but enjoyed a 10-3 advantage in blocks and also had just nine hitting errors to 29 for the Red Storm.
 
The Golden Eagles also had a 5-1 edge in service aces and a 47-38 advantage in digs.
 
The Golden Eagles took big leads in all three sets and were never seriously threatened. Cal State L.A. raced to a 17-5 lead in the opening set following a strong serving run by Lofrano that included a pair of aces and two kills from Silveyra. The Golden Eagles closed out the set with a block by JamieAnn Bero and Lofrano.
 
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 19-8 lead in the second set following a kill by Mia Alcaraz and closed out the set after a kill by Lofrano and back-to-back kills from Molly Lyons.
 
The Golden Eagles took a 16-9 lead in the final set and never looked back. A kill by Bero got the Golden Eagles to match point at 24-15 and a service error by Dixie State ended the match.

Cal State L.A. was unable to duplicate that effort in its evening contest. The Golden Eagles were on the short end in kills, 48-27, and hit just .183 to .282 for the Falcons (2-1). Seattle Pacific also had a 6-1 advantage in service aces, while the Golden Eagles had a 7-4 edge in blocks.

Lofrano had 11 kills and 10 digs for the Golden Eagles, while Loreal Carter had six kills and four blocks.

The Golden Eagles fell behind, 7-1 in the opening frame and never bounced back and it wasn't until the second set that Cal State L.A. began to get back into the match. The Golden Eagles led as late as 17-16 after a Sylveyra block, but the Falcons struck back for four straight points and led the rest of the way.

Cal State L.A. looked like it would extend the match when the Golden Eagles surged to a 14-9 lead in the third set after a block by JamieAnn Bero and Lofrano. The Golden Eagles still led 16-10 after a kill by Sylveyra and 18-14 after a kill by Lauren Gomez. The Golden Eagles ultimately held a 19-15 edge, but Seattle Pacific rolled off 10 straight points to end the match.
 
Cal State L.A. will begin California Collegiate Athletic Association play on Friday night in its home opener against Sonoma State at 7 p.m.
