Golden Eagles Begin Season With Tourney Win

Box Score SEATTLE -- After a rocky beginning, Cal State L.A.'s volleyball team came roaring back to post a victory in its opening match of 2014.

The Golden Eagles dropped the first set and needed to pull out a tight second set before posting a 19-25, 28-26, 25-19, 25-18 victory over Western Oregon in the Seattle Pacific Tournament. Cal State L.A. (1-0) had to rally from deficits in the second and fourth sets to record the victory.

Kymberly Silveyra had a match-high 20 kills and hit at a .436 percentage to lead the Golden Eagles, while Iona Lofrano had 19 kills and 15 digs. April Reyes had 15 digs and Sydney Kralj had 28 set assists. Christie Colasurdo had nine kills to lead Western Oregon (0-1), while Jaryn Ramos had a team-high 17 digs.

Cal State L.A. had a 54-43 advantage in kills and hit at a .233 percentage to just .142 for Western Oregon. The Golden Eagles had an 8-4 edge in service aces, but also committed 12 service errors to nine for Western Oregon. The Golden Eagles were also on the short end of a 7-4 count in blocks.

After dropping the first set, the Golden Eagles found themselves early in the second set, 13-10. Cal State L.A. tied the set at 16-16 after a kill by Silveyra and scored four straight points to break a 19-19 tie after kills by Loreal Carter and Silveyra, an attack error and an ace by Carter. The Golden Eagles got to set point at 24-20 after a kill by Lofrano, only to see Western Oregon storm back with four straight points to tie the set. A Silveyra kill broke a 26-26 tie and a block by Mia Alcaraz and Lofrano evened the match.

The Golden Eagles broke out to a 14-8 lead in the third set after a block by Alcaraz and Silveyra and opened up a 21-15 lead after a kill by Carter. A Lofrano kill got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-19 and an attack error after a serve by JamieAnn Bero gave the Golden Eagles the frame.

Cal State L.A. trailed early in the fourth set, 10-7, but turned things around to close out the match. Kills by Kralj and Lofrano, an ace by Kralj, an attack error and a kill by Kralj gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good. A kill by Carter got the Golden Eagles to 22-17, a kill by Silveyra made it 23-18, a kill by Lofrano made it 24-18 and an attack error ended the match.

Cal State L.A. will conclude play in the tournament with a pair of matches on Friday. The Golden Eagles will face Dixie State at 9:30 a.m. and host Seattle Pacific at 8 p.m.
