Golden Eagles Start Quickly And Beat Toros

CARSON -- Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team started quickly and never looked back Friday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game against Cal State Dominguez Hills.

The Golden Eagles struck for three first-half goals and went on to a 5-0 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills at Stub Hub Field 3. Cal State L.A. (8-1-1, 3-0 CCAA) retained its share of the CCAA lead with its third straight conference victory.

Norie Pablo was instrumental in the Golden Eagles' fast start on Friday, scoring two of the team's three goals in the opening half. Joanna Espinoza also scored in the first half on a 25-yard free kick, while Veronika Steen and Heather Williams added second-half goals to complete the victory.

Yi Du made five saves for the Golden Eagles to record her fifth shutout of the season.

Cal State L.A. had a 28-13 advantage in shots, including a 13-5 edge in shots on goal.

The Golden Eagles had a 17-5 edge in shots in the first half while building their 3-0 lead.

Williams had a match-high five shots for the Golden Eagles, while CaryAnn Parish had four.

Pablo gave the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute. Amalia Arvidsson started the scoring play with a pass to Shea Richards, whose initial shot was saved by Cal State Dominguez Hills goalkeeper Michelle Mendez. Pablo, though, was there to knock in the rebound for her first goal of the season. Richards picked up the assist.

Espinoza then made it 2-0 in the 22nd minute when she drilled in a free kick from 25 yards out for her fourth goal of the season.

Pablo then made it 3-0 before halftime with her second goal of the game. Espinoza dribbled through a defender and sent in a cross to Pablo, who knocked it in for the three-goal lead in the 31st minute.

Veronika Steen added a goal in the 53rd minute, her first of the season, to make it 4-0. Alejah Valmonte got the assist, getting the ball to an open Steen, who found the net from outside the box.

Williams then completed the scoring in the final minute with her first goal of the season. Jackeline Lopez picked up the assist.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a game at Cal State San Bernardino at 2 p.m.
