TURLOCK – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team clinched a share of its first California Collegiate Athletic Association title since 2009 thanks to a hard-fought draw at Cal State Stanislaus on Friday.
The Golden Eagles (13-1-2, 8-0-1 CCAA) had twice the number of shots as Cal State Stanislaus, but needed a big save from
Yi Du in the final minute of the second overtime to earn a 0-0 tie with the defending conference champions. Cal State L.A., ranked seventh in the nation and No. 2 in the NCAA Division II West Region, now has 25 points and a six-point lead over second-place Chico State with two conference matches remaining.
The Golden Eagles have wrapped up the No. 1 seed for the six-team CCAA Championship Tournament and have wrapped up a first-round bye.
Cal State L.A. ran its shutout streak to a program-best seven straight and also now has a 10-match unbeaten streak.
Cal State Stanislaus (11-4-1, 4-4-1 CCAA) snapped a three-match losing streak with the tie, but slipped into seventh place in the conference and is in danger of not reaching the CCAA Tournament.
Neither team generated many scoring chances, especially in the first half when Cal State L.A. had a 2-1 advantage in shots.
The Golden Eagles seemingly began to take control of the match in the second half in terms of possession and had a 9-5 advantage in shots.
Cal State L.A. had its best stretch in the first overtime period and had all four shots, including one on frame.
Heather Williams had a pair of shots from inside the circle that just missed,
Veronika Steen fired off a shot just high and
Candice Holt took a shot that was saved by Cal State Stanislaus goalkeeper Chelsea Lewandowski.
The save of the match came in the final minute of the second overtime when Cal State Stanislaus' Katelyn Nebesnick found herself with a clear shot at Du, who was able to deflect the hard point-blank shot. The Warriors wound up with a corner kick, but the Golden Eagle defense was able to clear the ball away and the final seconds ticked off.
Du made three saves in the game for the Golden Eagles, while Lewandowski made four for the Warriors.
Amalia Arvidsson had five shots to lead all players in the game, while Williams had three.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a road match at Cal State East Bay.
